One side of your Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 suddenly went silent. The left bud plays fine while the right one stays dead, or the audio cuts in and out on one side while the other works perfectly. In almost every case, the cause is something you can fix in a few minutes without tools or a trip to the Apple Store.
The quickest test takes about 30 seconds. Put both earbuds back in the case, close the lid, wait 10 seconds, then open it and take them out again. Place both in your ears at the same time. This forces a fresh stereo sync between the two buds and clears up about half of the one-side-silent issues people run into. If audio comes through both sides, you're good. If not, move through the steps below.
Check the L/R Audio Balance First
Before you assume a bud is broken, check your phone's audio balance settings. A slider that's accidentally shifted to one side sends all sound to one bud regardless of which one is actually working.
On iOS, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance and make sure it's centered. On Android, open Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements (or Audio on some versions) and check the L/R balance there. It's a one-second glance that frequently saves the rest of the troubleshooting session.
Clean the Charging Contacts on the Case and Buds
The most common reason one Powerbeats Pro 2 side stops working is that the bud isn't charging correctly. Dirt builds up on the gold contacts at the base of each earbud and on the matching pins inside the case. Earwax, pocket lint, and skin oil create enough resistance that one bud stays at 5% while the other charges to 100%.
Pull both buds out and wipe the metal contacts with a dry microfiber cloth. For stuck-on gunk, a cotton swab barely dampened with 90% isopropyl alcohol works, just don't let any liquid drip into the charging ports. Clean the spring-loaded pins inside the case wells the same way. Pop the buds back in, close the lid, and leave them alone for five minutes. If both sides show similar battery levels after that, dirty contacts were your problem.
Check the Speaker Mesh for Wax
Sometimes the bud is technically working but you can't hear it because the speaker mesh is clogged. Look at the black oval mesh on the inner end of each bud the part that sits inside your ear canal. The silent side usually has noticeably more buildup.
Use a dry, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush the mesh outward. Don't poke anything sharp through the holes or you'll puncture the driver underneath. If brushing doesn't clear it, a piece of sticky tape pressed gently against the grille can lift wax off the surface. When you're done, both mesh grilles should look equally clean and allow air through.
Reset the Powerbeats Pro 2 the Right Way
If cleaning didn't bring the dead side back, a full reset is the next step. This clears any internal pairing mismatch between the two buds that can happen after a dropped Bluetooth connection or a failed firmware update.
Place both earbuds in the case with the lid closed. Press and hold the system button on the inside of the case it's the small circular button near the hinge. Keep holding it for 15 seconds until the front LED flashes red and white. That's the factory reset. Release the button and pair the buds to your phone again like you did the first time.
On iOS, open the case near your iPhone and the normal H1 pairing prompt should appear. On Android, open the Beats app, tap Pair new, and follow the on-screen steps.
Re-Pair From Scratch
If only one bud connects when both are out of the case, the saved Bluetooth record on your phone might be corrupted. Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings, find the Powerbeats Pro 2 in the paired devices list, and tap Forget This Device (iOS) or Unpair (Android).
Now put both buds in the case and leave the lid open. Press and hold the system button on the case until the front LED starts blinking white. That puts the buds in pairing mode. Your phone should detect them as a new device. Once reconnected, both buds should activate together and stay in stereo.
Turn Off In-Ear Detection Temporarily
The Powerbeats Pro 2 uses an optical sensor to detect whether a bud is in your ear. If that sensor gets confused by sweat, a loose fit, or a smudge, it can tell the bud to pause playback even when the bud is sitting in your ear. That creates the illusion that one side is dead when it's really just paused.
On iOS, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the i icon next to your Powerbeats Pro 2, and toggle off Automatic Ear Detection. On Android, open the Beats app, tap your buds, and look for Ear Detection in the device settings. Turn it off and test both sides again. If audio comes through both buds, the sensor was triggering a false pause. You can leave ear detection off or clean the sensors carefully and turn it back on later.
Update the Firmware
Beats has pushed firmware updates that fix stereo sync bugs since the Powerbeats Pro 2 launched in 2025. On iOS, firmware updates happen silently in the background when the buds are in the case near your iPhone. Keep the case close to your phone with the lid open and both buds inside, then leave them plugged in or with enough battery for the update to complete.
On Android, open the Beats app, tap your buds, and look for a firmware update option under the device settings. Both buds need to be in the case with good battery and your phone nearby. The update usually takes 5 10 minutes. After it finishes, do the reset step above before testing whether both sides now work.
Test on Another Device
If you've tried everything above and one side is still silent, pair the Powerbeats Pro 2 to a different phone or tablet. If both sides work fine on the second device, the issue is with your original phone's Bluetooth connection, not the buds. Reset network settings on that phone or check if a recent OS update broke something.
If the same side stays silent on every device you try, the bud itself has a hardware problem. That's rare with these, but it happens. Reach out to Apple or Beats support with your proof of purchase and they'll handle it under warranty.
