Firmware updates on the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are pickier than most people expect. The update process handled through the Beats app on Android or directly in iOS Settings needs the case charged above 50%, both buds sitting inside with the lid open, and a stable Bluetooth link from the moment you tap install until it finishes. Miss any one requirement and the update either hangs indefinitely or fails without a clear message.
The quickest fix is also the most common one: the case battery. The case needs at least 50% charge to push firmware to both earbuds. Plug it in with the included USB-C cable or set it on a Qi charger. Leave it for 30 minutes with the lid closed, then check the status lights (white means ready) and try the update again. Most failures disappear once the case has enough juice.
Charge Both Buds and the Case Together
Open the case lid and look at the LED on the front. If it's red or off, the case is below the threshold. Connect USB-C (5W standard input) or place it on a Qi pad. Keep the lid closed while charging so both buds top off too each bud needs a healthy individual charge for the firmware to install.
On iOS, you can check exact battery levels by holding the case near your unlocked iPhone or adding the Batteries widget. On Android, open the Beats app and tap your Powerbeats Pro 2 to see percentages. Wait until case shows at least 50% and both buds show at least 30% before retrying the update.
Keep the Lid Open During the Update
The firmware deploys to both buds simultaneously. If you close the lid or remove one bud mid-update, only the bud still in the case gets the new firmware. The other stays on the old version, which can cause weird pairing quirks. Place both buds in the case, open the lid all the way, and leave it open for the entire update window. Do not touch them.
Stay Close to Your Phone
The update transfers over Bluetooth from your phone to the case. If your phone locks, you walk to another room, or the Bluetooth link drops, the update aborts. Set the phone right next to the case and avoid using it until the Beats app or iOS Settings reports success. I'd even plug the phone in so battery drain isn't an issue.
If you're on Android, make sure the Beats app doesn't get closed by battery optimization. Go to Settings > Apps > Beats > Battery and set it to Unrestricted. On iOS, simply keep the Settings app open and the phone unlocked during the update.
Clear the Beats App Cache (Android Only)
The Beats app caches firmware files locally. A partial download can corrupt that cache, and every subsequent update tries to reuse the bad file. Open Android Settings > Apps > Beats > Storage > Clear cache. Don't tap Clear data unless you want to lose your custom EQ and ear detection settings.
After clearing cache, reopen the Beats app, tap your Powerbeats Pro 2, and check for the firmware update again. The app will re-fetch a fresh copy from Apple's servers.
On iOS, there's no equivalent cache to clear because the update is managed through the system-level Settings. If you're on iOS and updates hang, skip straight to the reset step below.
If the Update Freezes or Shows an Error
Some users see the update get stuck at a certain percentage or show a generic "Update failed" message. Do not tap retry immediately the buds may be in a half-updated state and a second push can leave them corrupted. Wait at least 5 minutes. Then restart your phone completely (full power cycle, not just lock and unlock). After the reboot, open the Beats app (or iOS Settings > General > About > Beats Powerbeats Pro 2) and the update should resume cleanly. Skipping the wait or the reboot is why this loop keeps happening.
Check Bluetooth Stability Before Retrying
A shaky Bluetooth connection will sabotage any update attempt. Play music for a solid 5 minutes while the buds are in your ears. If audio cuts out, skips, or distorts during that test, the link isn't stable enough. Move closer to your phone, turn off Bluetooth on any nearby devices you don't need, and remove the case from any metal surfaces that might cause interference. Only attempt the update again once music plays uninterrupted.
Reset the Powerbeats Pro 2 and Re-Pair
If the update keeps failing despite full battery and a stable connection, a full reset clears out corrupted firmware data. Place both earbuds in the case and hold the system button on the inside of the case for 15 seconds. Release when the front LEDs flash red and white. The buds will factory reset and disconnect from your phone.
Re-pair by opening the case lid near your unlocked iPhone the setup card should appear. On Android, open the Beats app and follow the pairing prompt. After re-pairing, the app or iOS Settings should offer the firmware update again. A clean post-reset state gives the update a much higher success rate.
Update the Beats App on Android (or iOS Settings)
Sometimes the issue is on the app side. On Android, open Google Play, search for Beats, and tap Update if it's available. Older versions of the Beats app may have compatibility bugs with newer Powerbeats Pro 2 firmware. Updating the app to the current release frequently resolves the update flow.
On iOS, the update is handled system-wide in Settings, so there's no separate app to update. However, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 18 or newer if you want to use the heart rate monitoring feature otherwise, the firmware may skip that portion. A regular iPhone software update through Settings > General > Software Update ensures the best compatibility.
