When your ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 suddenly goes silent, it can be a real buzzkill, especially on a gaming laptop. The issue could be a simple setting in Armoury Crate, a driver conflict, or a deeper Windows problem. Let's get your sound back.
Check Volume and Output in Windows
First, click the speaker icon in your taskbar. Make sure the master volume slider isn't at zero or muted. Right above the slider, click to see the list of output devices. If you recently unplugged headphones, Windows might still be trying to send audio to that port. Select your laptop's internal speakers from the list.
Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Head to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find and run the Playing Audio troubleshooter. It's a quick way for Windows to automatically detect and fix common glitches, like disabled services or incorrect default devices. I'd start with this one.
Restart Your Laptop
This is the classic fix for a reason. A full restart reloads all audio drivers and clears any stuck processes. Click Start > Power > Restart. It's particularly effective if the sound cut out after a Windows update, a game crash, or waking from sleep mode.
Verify Armoury Crate Audio Settings
Open the Armoury Crate app. Go to the Device tab and select your G16. Look for any audio-related settings or profiles. Some performance modes might affect audio prioritization. Also, check if there's an option to switch between audio endpoints, as the MUX switch for the GPU can sometimes influence this.
Update Your Audio Drivers Manually
Don't rely solely on Windows Update or Armoury Crate for this. Visit the official ASUS support page for your specific G16 model. Download the latest audio driver (usually from Realtek) directly from there. Before installing, you can uninstall the current driver via Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, then run the fresh installer.
Check the Audio Output in Sound Settings
Go to Settings > System > Sound. Under the Output section, ensure your "Speakers" are set as the default device. Click on it, then click Properties. Make sure the volume here is up and the device isn't muted. This is a separate check from the taskbar icon.
Restart the Windows Audio Services
Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter. In the list, find Windows Audio. Right-click it and select Restart. Do the same for the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service. If either was hung up, this will get audio back immediately.
Disable Audio Enhancements
In Settings > System > Sound, click your speaker device and then Properties. Scroll down to find Audio enhancements. Try setting this to Off. Enhancements from Dolby or others can sometimes conflict and cause audio to drop out completely on gaming laptops.
Check App-Specific Volume Mixer
Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Volume mixer. You'll see individual volume sliders for each application and for system sounds. Make sure the app you're using (like your game or browser) isn't muted or turned down independently of the main volume.
Inspect for Physical and Connection Issues
If you're using headphones or external speakers, test them on another device. Try a different pair on your G16. For the internal speakers, check if the bottom grilles or side ports are obstructed. Also, if you have any USB-C or HDMI devices connected, try unplugging them, as Windows can sometimes redirect audio to those outputs.
Roll Back a Recent Audio Driver Update
If the sound stopped after a recent driver update, you can revert it. Open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, and double-click your audio device. Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver. This will reinstall the previous version that was working.
