When your ASUS ROG Phone 9's voice assistant stops responding, it can feel like you've lost a key feature of your powerful gaming phone. Whether you're trying to launch a game with a voice command or just get a quick weather update, here's how to get it working again.

Check Your Voice Assistant App

First, figure out which assistant you're using. The ROG Phone 9 runs Android 15, so you could be using Google Assistant, Bixby, or a third-party app. Open the app you normally use and see if it launches manually when you tap the microphone icon.

If the app itself is crashing, try clearing its cache. Go to Settings > Apps, find your assistant app, tap Storage & cache, and then select Clear cache. This won't delete your data but can fix temporary glitches.

Verify the "Hey Google" Setting

For Google Assistant, the hands-free feature needs to be explicitly enabled. Open the Google app on your phone and tap your profile picture in the top right corner.

Go to Settings > Voice > Voice Match. Make sure the toggle for Hey Google is switched on. If it's already on, try turning it off and back on to retrain the voice model.

Check for Microphone Blockages

The ROG Phone 9 has multiple microphones for noise cancellation during calls and gaming. If any are blocked, your assistant can't hear you. Check the microphone ports along the top and bottom edges of the phone.

Look for lint, dust, or any residue from your gaming sessions. A can of compressed air can gently clear out debris. Also, ensure your phone case isn't covering any of the microphone holes.

Disable Battery Saver and X Mode

Aggressive power-saving modes can disable background processes, including voice assistant listening. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel and make sure Battery Saver is turned off.

Also, check if you're in one of the performance modes. Open the Armoury Crate app. If you're in X Mode or a custom profile that prioritizes every resource for gaming, it might be restricting the assistant. Try switching to Dynamic mode to test.

Review App Permissions

Your voice assistant needs permission to use the microphone. Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager. Find and tap on Microphone.

Locate your voice assistant app in the list (like Google or Bixby) and ensure it's set to Allow. While you're there, also check that it has permission for Location, as some voice commands need that info to work.

Test in Safe Mode

A third-party app you installed could be causing a conflict. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps. Press and hold the power button until the power menu appears.

Then, tap and hold the Power off option on your screen. You'll get a prompt to reboot into Safe Mode. Tap OK. Once in Safe Mode, try using your voice assistant. If it works, a recently installed app is likely the culprit.

Update Your Software

System bugs can break features like voice activation. ASUS and Google release updates to fix these issues. Go to Settings > System > System update to check for any available OS updates.

You should also update the Google app and Google Assistant through the Play Store. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to Manage apps & device, and see if updates are available for those specific apps.

Retrain Your Voice Model

Background noise or a change in your voice can confuse the assistant. It's a good idea to retrain it. For Google Assistant, go to Google app Settings > Voice > Voice Match and tap Retrain voice model.

Follow the on-screen prompts, speaking clearly in your normal voice. I'd recommend doing this in a quiet room, not while the phone's cooling system is ramping up from a gaming session.

Perform a Force Restart

A full reboot can clear out temporary software hiccups that a normal restart might miss. On the ROG Phone 9, press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds or more.

Keep holding it until you see the ASUS logo appear on the screen, then release. This forces the phone to shut down and boot back up fresh, which can resolve a surprising number of minor issues.

Reset App Preferences

This resets all your app permissions, notifications, and default apps without deleting any personal data. It's a useful step if something got misconfigured. Go to Settings > System > Reset options.

Tap on Reset app preferences and confirm. After the phone resets, you'll need to re-grant permissions when you use apps for the first time, but it can clear up conflicts preventing the assistant from working.
