If your ASUS ROG Phone 9 is stuttering or freezing up, especially during a game, it's incredibly frustrating. You've got a powerhouse with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, so it shouldn't feel slow. The good news is that lag is almost always a software or settings issue you can fix yourself.

I'd start with a simple force restart. Just press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds until you see the ROG logo appear. This clears out any temporary glitches in the memory and is the quickest way to solve a random freeze.

Check for System and App Updates

Outdated software is a common culprit for performance hiccups. Head to Settings > System > System update to check for the latest Android security patches and system optimizations from ASUS. While you're there, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and hit Manage apps & device to update all your apps.

Manage Your Game and System Modes

This is where the ROG Phone really shines. Swipe down from the top right to open the Quick Settings panel and look for the Game Genie or Armoury Crate icon. Tap into your game profiles or X Sense. Make sure you're using a performance-oriented mode like "X Mode" or "Dynamic" for gaming, not a battery saver preset that limits the CPU.

Also, enable Bypass Charging if you're gaming while plugged in. You'll find this in the Game Genie overlay or battery settings. It powers the phone directly from the charger, reducing heat buildup from charging the battery simultaneously, which can cause thermal throttling and lag.

Free Up Storage Space

When your internal storage is nearly full, the phone has less room to operate efficiently. Go to Settings > Storage to see what's taking up space. The ROG Phone 9's high-resolution screenshots and game recordings can eat up gigabytes quickly. Clear your cache for individual apps by going to Settings > Apps, selecting an app, and tapping Storage & cache > Clear cache.

Close Background Apps and Processes

Even on a phone with 16GB or 24GB of RAM, too many apps running can cause conflicts. Use the recent apps overview (swipe up from the bottom and hold) and swipe away everything you're not using. For a more thorough clean-up, you can use the Smart Cleaning tool in the Phone Manager or Settings app to kill background processes with one tap.

Optimize the AniMe Vision Display

The customizable LED matrix on the back is cool, but it's an extra process running. If you're not actively showing off your setup, consider turning it off to free up a tiny bit of system resources and save battery. You can manage this through the Armoury Crate app or its dedicated settings.

Monitor and Manage Battery & Heat

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is powerful but can get warm during long sessions. Excessive heat forces the phone to slow down (throttle) to protect itself. Go to Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most power recently. A rogue app draining battery in the background can also cause lag.

Try to avoid using the phone while it's fast charging with the 65W adapter, as this generates significant heat. Using a slower charger or the 15W wireless pad for casual use can help keep temperatures in check.

Check for Rogue or Poorly Optimized Apps

Sometimes, one specific app is the problem. Think about what you installed or updated just before the lag started. Boot the phone into Safe Mode to disable all third-party apps temporarily. Press and hold the power button, then long-press the "Power off" option on-screen until you see the Safe Mode prompt.

If the phone runs smoothly in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is likely the cause. You'll need to uninstall apps one by one to find the offender, starting with the most recent.

Reset App Preferences or Network Settings

This is a less nuclear option than a full reset. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap Reset app preferences. This won't delete any app data, but it will reset all your notification permissions, default apps, and background restrictions to their original states, which can fix misbehaving apps.

If your lag seems tied to online games or browsing, you can also try Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth from the same menu. You'll have to reconnect to all your networks and re-pair accessories afterward.

Perform a Factory Reset

If you've tried everything else and the lag persists, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase all your data, so make sure everything is backed up to Google Drive or your computer first. You can initiate this from Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).

For a completely clean start, avoid restoring from a backup of apps and data immediately after the reset. Set the phone up as new, install your essential apps fresh from the Play Store, and see if the performance returns. If it does, your issue was with corrupted system data or a problematic backup.
