When your ASUS ROG Phone 9 starts restarting on its own, it can be incredibly disruptive, especially in the middle of a game. This kind of random reboot can be caused by a software glitch, a misbehaving app, or even a hardware hiccup. Before you worry, there are several straightforward fixes you can try right now.
It's a good idea to make sure your data is backed up before you start. You can use Google Drive or the built-in backup feature in your phone's settings. This way, your game saves and settings are safe no matter what.
Force Restart Your ROG Phone 9
A force restart is the quickest way to clear out a temporary software glitch that's causing the restarts. For the ROG Phone 9, the process is simple. Just press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the ROG logo appear on the screen, which means the phone is rebooting.
This doesn't delete any of your data. It just forces the phone to shut down and start up fresh, which can resolve a lot of minor issues.
Check for Problematic Apps
Third-party apps, especially games or performance utilities, are a common cause of random restarts. Start by closing all your recent apps. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold, then swipe away all the app previews.
If the restarts seem to happen when using a specific app, try clearing that app's cache first. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps, select the problematic app, then tap Storage & cache > Clear cache. This gets rid of temporary files without touching your login info.
Update Your Apps and Android System
Running outdated software is a classic recipe for instability. First, update all your apps from the Google Play Store. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Updates available to update everything.
Next, check for a system update. ASUS and Google regularly release patches that fix bugs. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." If one is available, install it. Make sure your phone is plugged in or has plenty of battery first.
Review System Stability in Armoury Crate
Your ROG Phone 9 has a powerful tool for monitoring its health called Armoury Crate. Open the Armoury Crate app and look for any system alerts or stability reports. It can sometimes flag issues with specific game profiles or performance settings that might be pushing the hardware too hard.
If you've been using a very aggressive performance mode in X Sense, try switching to a balanced profile. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is powerful but can generate heat during long sessions, which might lead to protective restarts.
Free Up Storage Space
If your phone's storage is completely full, it can cause all sorts of strange behavior, including random reboots. Android needs some free space to operate smoothly. Go to Settings > Storage to see how much space you have left.
Consider offloading large game installs you don't play often, or moving photos and videos to the cloud. The AniMe Vision matrix on the back also creates small cache files for its animations, so disabling it temporarily can free up a tiny bit of space and save battery.
Disable or Adjust Special Features
Some of the ROG Phone's unique features might interact poorly with certain apps. As a test, try turning off the AniMe Vision LED display on the back. You can find this in Settings > Display > AniMe Vision.
Also, check your gaming settings in the Armoury Crate or X Sense. If you have "Bypass charging" enabled, that's great for reducing heat, but make sure your other performance tweaks aren't set to an unstable level. Try resetting your game profiles to default.
Reset Your Phone's Settings
If the problem is deeper in the system settings, you can reset them without losing your personal data. This will revert your Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and custom display settings back to default, but your apps and files will stay.
Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Then, tap on Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth or Reset app preferences first, as these are less disruptive. If the issue continues, you can try Reset all settings.
Boot into Safe Mode
Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If the phone stops restarting in Safe Mode, you know for sure that a downloaded app is the culprit. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears.
Then, tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK." Once in Safe Mode, which will be indicated in the bottom corner, use the phone normally for a while to see if it restarts.
Perform a Factory Reset
If all else fails, a factory reset is the final software step. This will erase everything on your phone and return it to its original out-of-the-box state. Absolutely ensure you have a complete backup before proceeding.
You can do this through the settings by going to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). Alternatively, if the phone is stuck in a restart loop, you can use the hardware keys. Power the phone off completely.
Then, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together until the ASUS logo appears. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and select it with the power button. This is a last resort, but it often clears persistent software corruption.
