When your ASUS ROG Phone 9 keeps closing apps in the middle of a game or while you're just browsing, it breaks your flow. This is a powerful phone with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, so it shouldn't be struggling. The issue usually comes down to a few specific things, from aggressive memory management to heat buildup.
I'd start with the quickest fix first. Give your phone a fresh start by holding down the Power button for about 15 seconds until you see the ROG logo appear. This force restart clears out any temporary software glitches that might be causing apps to crash. It's the equivalent of a clean reboot for your gaming session.
Check Your Phone's Temperature and Performance Mode
The Snapdragon 8 Elite is a powerhouse, but it can generate significant heat during long gaming sessions. When the phone gets too hot, it will throttle performance or close apps to protect itself. Feel the back of the phone, especially near the camera module and the AniMe Vision display.
If it's warm, take a break and let it cool down. For a more proactive fix, swipe from the top right to open the Quick Settings panel and tap the "X Sense" icon. This opens the game dashboard. Make sure you're not in a super aggressive "X Mode" that's pushing the CPU too hard for a particular app. Try switching to a balanced profile.
Also, enable "Bypass charging" from within X Sense if you're gaming while plugged in. This feature powers the phone directly from the charger, reducing heat from the battery. Less heat means more stable performance and fewer unexpected app closures.
Free Up RAM and Manage Background Apps
Even with plenty of RAM, having too many apps running in the background can cause conflicts. Open your recent apps view and swipe away everything you're not actively using. For more control, go to Settings > Apps and select any app that's misbehaving.
Tap on Force Stop to completely shut it down, then relaunch it. You can also check the app's battery usage here. If an app is using a high percentage, it might be buggy and draining resources, leading to crashes.
Clear the App's Cache and Data
Corrupted temporary files are a classic cause of app instability. This is a safe first step before reinstalling. Go to Settings > Apps, find the problematic app, and tap on it. Select Storage & cache.
Tap Clear cache first. This deletes temporary files without touching your login info or saved data. If the app keeps closing, you can then try Clear storage or Clear data. Warning, this will reset the app as if it was just installed, so you'll need to log back in.
Update Everything
Outdated software is a common culprit. First, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device. Tap Update all to get the latest versions of all your apps, which include bug fixes.
Next, check for a system update. ASUS releases updates to optimize performance and fix issues specific to the ROG Phone 9. Go to Settings > System > System update to see if anything is available. Install it if there is.
Review Your Battery and Display Settings
Some power-saving features can be a little too aggressive. Go to Settings > Battery and look at your battery mode. If it's set to "Dynamic" or "Power saving," try switching to "Performance" to see if the app closures stop.
Also, consider turning off the AniMe Vision matrix display on the back if you don't need it for your current game or app. It's a cool feature, but it does use extra GPU and battery resources that could be redirected to keeping your main app stable. You can toggle it in the Armoury Crate app.
Check for Storage Space and Reinstall the App
Your phone needs free space to operate smoothly. Go to Settings > Storage and see how much space is left. If you're below 10-15%, try clearing some cached data or moving photos to the cloud.
If one specific app is the only problem, a fresh install often works. Uninstall the app completely, then restart your phone. Finally, reinstall it directly from the Google Play Store. This gives you a clean slate with all its files.
Boot into Safe Mode
This helps you figure out if a third-party app you installed is causing the problem. To boot into Safe Mode on the ROG Phone 9, press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears. Then, long-press the "Power off" option on your screen.
A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK." If your apps run fine in Safe Mode, you know the issue is with something you downloaded. Start by removing any recent apps, especially performance boosters, custom launchers, or battery savers that might interfere with system processes.
