You need to reset your TP-Link Deco BE85. Maybe the mesh is acting up after a power outage. Maybe you're handing it off to a new owner. The Deco BE85 is a Wi-Fi 7 mesh router with 10GbE ports, and the reset process is simpler than you might think. You've got two real options: an in-app reboot or a full factory reset via the button on the bottom.
Start with the reboot. Open the Deco app on your phone (iOS 14+ or Android 8+), go to your network, tap the specific BE85 unit, and hit Reboot. This clears temporary glitches without touching your config. If that doesn't fix things, the factory reset is your next step. Hold the reset button on the bottom for about one second. The LED flashes yellow, then solid yellow while it boots, then blinks blue when it's ready to set up from scratch.
Save Your Network Settings Before You Wipe
The Deco app doesn't offer a one-click backup for its entire config. Before you press that reset button, take a few screenshots. Capture your Wi‑Fi name and password, any port forwarding rules, custom DNS settings, and guest network details.
If you're using HomeShield Pro features like advanced parental controls, note those too. You'll need to recreate everything from scratch after the reset. Budget about 10 minutes for this, it's tedious but saves a headache later.
Is a Factory Reset Actually What You Need?
The button on the bottom of the Deco BE85 triggers a full factory reset with that one-second press. There's no soft reset or partial wipe built into the hardware. If your issue is something minor, like a satellite not connecting or a device dropping off, consider a simple power cycle first. Unplug the gateway BE85, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and let it boot up. That fixes more issues than most people expect.
If the power cycle doesn't work and you've already tried the in-app reboot, then the factory reset is the right move. Just know that it wipes everything, including your network name, password, and any custom settings. You're starting from a clean slate.
Remove the Deco BE85 from Your Account
Here's the catch that catches a lot of people: a factory reset clears the local configuration, but it doesn't automatically remove the unit from your TP-Link account. The Deco stays linked to your account in the cloud. If you're selling or gifting it, the new owner won't be able to claim it until you free it up.
To remove it, open the Deco app, tap the network, tap the specific BE85 you're resetting, scroll to settings, and tap Remove from Network. Do this before you do the factory reset for the cleanest transition. If you've already reset it and the Deco shows offline in the app, you can still remove it from the same menu.
Set Up the Deco BE85 from Scratch
After the factory reset, the LED blinks blue to confirm it's in setup mode. Open the Deco app and follow the guided steps. The app handles most of the work automatically.
- 1.It creates a temporary setup network between your phone and the BE85.
- 2.You'll connect the gateway Deco to your modem using an Ethernet cable, the BE85 has 2x 10G ports, so use whichever matches your internet plan (one is an RJ45/SFP+ combo).
- 3.Name your network and set a password. The device defaults to WPA2/WPA3 transitional mixed mode, which is fine for most devices.
- 4.Add any satellite BE85 units. The app prompts you to place them in different rooms and scans for them.
- 5.Sign in to your TP-Link account. If you removed the Deco earlier, you'll add it back under your account.
The entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes for a single unit, longer if you have multiple satellites. The app handles WAN authentication automatically for most ISPs, but you'll need PPPoE credentials ready if your provider requires them.
Recreate Your Custom Settings
Once the Deco BE85 is online, walk through the settings you photographed earlier. Open the Deco app, tap Network, then Advanced to find port forwarding, DNS, and other options. Add custom DNS if you use something like Cloudflare or Google. Recreate any static IP reservations or port forwarding rules.
If you subscribed to HomeShield Pro, reactivate it from the app. The advanced parental controls and IoT network isolation won't be functional until you do. This part takes about 10 minutes for a typical home setup.
Check That the Mesh Repaired Correctly
Satellite BE85 units usually reconnect automatically within a few minutes after the gateway is set up. Open the Deco app and check the network overview. Each satellite should show as online with a solid green or blue status indicator.
If a satellite stays offline after 10 minutes, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Give it another 5 minutes to find the newly configured gateway on the mesh. The AI-Driven Mesh feature in the BE85 handles channel and band optimization on its own, so you shouldn't need to manually assign anything.
The Deco BE85 is compatible with older TP-Link Deco models for a hybrid mesh, but if you're mixing units, reset them all at the same time and set them up as a fresh system for the most reliable connection.
