"My Straight Talk SIM activated but data won't load and I can't send pictures. What APN am I supposed to use?"

Straight Talk uses a single APN value (tfdata) across all its underlying networks, but the MCC and MNC codes change depending on whether your SIM is provisioned for Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile. Getting the MCC and MNC wrong is the most common reason data fails on Straight Talk even when the APN itself is correct.

Here is the verified setup, including how to figure out which underlying network your SIM is on so you can pick the right MCC and MNC pair.

Straight Talk Network and APN Overview

  • Straight Talk is owned by Verizon and operates as an MVNO on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile networks. Which underlying network your SIM uses depends on which one Straight Talk activated it for. Verizon SIMs are the most common.
  • The Android APN value is tfdata across all three networks. Spelling and capitalization matter; it is all lowercase, no spaces.
  • MCC and MNC change with the underlying network. Verizon: MCC 311, MNC 480. AT&T: MCC 310, MNC 410. T-Mobile: MCC 310, MNC 260.
  • For the fastest setup, text APN to 611611 from your Straight Talk number. Straight Talk pushes a configuration message back; tap it to install on most phones.

How to Open APN Settings

Before entering values, check which underlying network your Straight Talk SIM is on. The easiest way is to look at the SIM's packaging or the activation email, both of which usually specify Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile. If you cannot tell, look at the carrier name shown in your phone's status bar.

Android

  1. 1.Open Settings
  2. 2.Tap Network & Internet (or Connections on Samsung)
  3. 3.Tap Mobile Networks, then your Straight Talk SIM if dual-SIM
  4. 4.Tap Access Point Names
  5. 5.Tap the three-dot menu, then New APN
  6. 6.Enter the values from the Android list below, picking the MCC/MNC pair that matches your underlying network
  7. 7.Tap Save, then select the new APN
  8. 8.Restart the phone or toggle Airplane Mode for 20 seconds

iPhone and iPad

  1. 1.Open Settings
  2. 2.Tap Cellular or Mobile Data
  3. 3.Tap Cellular Data Network (or look under your Straight Talk SIM section on iOS 15 and later)
  4. 4.Enter the iPhone values from the list below
  5. 5.If Cellular Data Network is missing, run Reset Network Settings and try again

Straight Talk iPhone APN Values

iPhones running iOS 15 or later usually auto-configure these. If you need to enter them manually:

  • Cellular Data / Mobile Data (APN): tfdata
  • Username: <Not set>
  • Password: <Not set>
  • MMS:
    • APN: tfdata
    • MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
    • MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
    • MMS Max Message Size: 1048576
    • MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf
  • Personal Hotspot (if visible): APN = tfdata, Username and Password = <Not set>

Identifying Your Underlying Network

Straight Talk SIMs are physically different depending on which network they were provisioned for. The packaging usually states the underlying network clearly. If you no longer have the packaging, here is how to figure it out from the phone itself:

  • Look at the carrier name in the status bar. It often reads something like "Straight Talk" with a network indicator nearby.
  • Dial *228 on a Straight Talk Verizon-network SIM (this triggers Verizon's provisioning sequence). If the call goes through and the phone reprograms, you are on Verizon.
  • Check the SIM card itself if you can remove it. Verizon-network Straight Talk SIMs typically have "VZW" or a Verizon logo printed. AT&T-network SIMs reference AT&T or Cricket. T-Mobile-network SIMs reference T-Mobile.
  • If all else fails, call Straight Talk support and ask. They have the underlying network on file for every active line.

Straight Talk Connection Fixes

  • After saving the Android APN, reboot the phone. The new entry sometimes does not switch to active until the phone re-registers.
  • Confirm the MCC and MNC match the underlying network. A Verizon-network SIM with AT&T MCC and MNC will fail to connect even with the right APN value.
  • If MMS fails but data works, double-check the MMS Proxy. Straight Talk uses mms3.tracfone.com as a hostname (not an IP), and a typo here is the most common MMS issue.
  • Text APN to 611611 from your Straight Talk number. The auto-configuration message usually works without any manual entry.
  • For iPhone, install any pending Carrier Settings update at Settings > General > About before retrying.
  • If you switched phones recently, make sure the new phone supports the bands of your underlying network. A phone that works on Verizon may not pull good signal on AT&T or T-Mobile and vice versa.
  • If the issue began right after a number port to Straight Talk, give it 24 hours. Ports sometimes leave service in a half-provisioned state until Straight Talk completes the back-end work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Straight Talk use a different MCC and MNC for each network?

MCC and MNC are network identifiers used by the SIM and phone to know which infrastructure to register with. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile each have their own codes. Even though Straight Talk uses the same tfdata APN value across all of them, the MCC and MNC have to match the underlying network for the SIM to connect.

Can I switch my Straight Talk SIM from Verizon to AT&T network?

No. Straight Talk SIMs are network-specific. You need a new SIM if you want to move to a different underlying network. Contact Straight Talk support to request the swap.

Why is my MMS proxy a hostname instead of an IP address?

Straight Talk uses a hostname (mms3.tracfone.com) so it can change the underlying IP without forcing customers to update their phones. Some other carriers hardcode an IP, which can break MMS when the carrier moves servers.

The APN tfdata sounds like a placeholder. Is it correct?

Yes. tfdata stands for Tracfone Data (Straight Talk's parent company is Tracfone, which Verizon acquired). The lowercase spelling is required, and the value is the actual APN Straight Talk uses across its networks.

Do I need separate APN values for 5G on Straight Talk?

No. The same APN handles 4G LTE and 5G. To pull 5G access, enable 5G in your network mode settings and confirm your plan includes it.

What happens if I text APN to 611611 from a non-Straight Talk number?

The configuration message will not arrive, because the system needs to recognize your line as a Straight Talk number. If your line is brand new and not yet recognized, give it a few hours after activation before trying again.

Why does iPhone show different APN paths depending on iOS version?

iOS 15 and later put the APN editor under your specific carrier SIM section in Cellular settings. Older iOS versions used a single Cellular Data Network screen that applied to whichever SIM was active. The values are the same; the navigation just changed.
