Your PS5 Slim won't power on. You press the button and get nothing, or maybe a single beep followed by dead silence. This is an alarming problem on such an expensive console, but most of the time it's a quick fix.
The Slim shares the same basic recovery steps as the original PS5, but its smaller chassis and detachable disc drive introduce a few unique quirks. Most dead-console cases come down to a stuck power state, a corrupted system update, or a simple cable failure. Here's what to try in order.
Hard Power Cycle
Unplug the power cord from the back of the Slim. Don't just flip the switch on the power strip, physically remove the cord from the console. Wait a full 60 seconds. While it's unplugged, hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds to drain any residual charge from the internal capacitors.
Plug the cord back in directly to a known-good wall outlet. Press the power button once. This single step resolves more no-power PS5 Slim cases than anything else. The Slim's power management chip sometimes just needs a hard reset to wake back up.
Check the Power Cord and Outlet
The PS5 Slim uses a standard C7/C8 figure-8 power cord, same as the original model. If you have a spare lying around (many monitors, printers, and laptops use them), swap it out and test. A damaged cord can make the console look totally dead even when the hardware is fine.
Also test the outlet itself. Skip the surge protector and plug the Slim into a wall outlet you know works. Test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger first to confirm it's live. The Slim draws less power than the original PS5, but a bad outlet or overloaded power strip can still drop voltage below what the console needs.
Check for an HDMI Handshake Failure
Press the power button and listen carefully. If you hear the fan spin up or the faint boot beep, the console is on. The TV just isn't getting a signal. This is called an HDMI handshake failure, and it's more common than you'd think.
Check that the TV is on the right HDMI input. Cycle through the inputs with your TV remote just to be sure. Swap the HDMI cable for a known-good 4K-rated HDMI 2.1 cable and try a different port on the TV. If you get a picture on a different TV, your Slim is fine and the original TV's HDMI port is the problem.
Listen for Beep Codes
The Slim communicates through sound. One single beep at startup is normal and means the console is proceeding through its boot sequence. Three rapid beeps followed by silence usually points to a corrupted system software, which is recoverable through Safe Mode.
If you don't hear any beep at all and no fan spin, you're dealing with a power delivery issue. Skip ahead to the hardware checks. If you hear the beep but the console shuts off immediately after, the system software likely needs a rebuild or reinstall.
Boot Into Safe Mode
Safe Mode is the PS5's low-level recovery environment, and it almost always loads even when the normal boot fails. With the console fully off, press and hold the power button. Keep holding it until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds), then release. Plug your DualSense controller into the Slim's front USB-C port using the cable that came with it and press the PS button.
If the Safe Mode menu appears, your system is alive and recoverable. This is your best shot at getting the console back without wiping anything. The current PS5 system software is 26.x (build 26.03-13.20.00 as of April 2026), and Safe Mode can handle most corruption issues at that version.
Rebuild Database or Reinstall System Software
Once you're in Safe Mode, you have a few options. Try option 5 (Restore Default Settings) first because it doesn't touch your games or saves. If that doesn't help, try option 6 (Clear Cache and Rebuild Database). The rebuild process takes 5 to 30 minutes depending on how much data you have and fixes most boot-loop and crash-on-startup issues.
If the console still won't boot normally, the system software is damaged. You'll need option 8 (Reset PS5 - Reinstall System Software). Download the PS5 reinstallation file from Sony's support site on a computer. Place it in a folder named PS5/UPDATE on a FAT32-formatted USB stick, with the file named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Plug the USB into the Slim and follow the prompts. This wipes all user data, so hopefully your saves are backed up to the cloud.
Check the Detachable Disc Drive and M.2 SSD
If you have the disc version of the PS5 Slim, the detachable disc drive is a separate module that snaps into a large notch on the console's side. A loose connection here can confuse the system on boot. Remove the drive and snap it back on firmly. Many Slim disc bundles ship factory-paired, so you shouldn't get a pairing prompt, but reseating the drive can still resolve a no-power or no-boot condition.
Also check the M.2 expansion bay. If you installed a custom PCIe Gen 4 or Gen 5 drive, a poorly seated card can prevent the console from posting. Remove the white side panel, unscrew the bay cover, and take the M.2 drive out. Test the console without it. If it boots fine, reseat the drive firmly and test again.
Power Supply Unit Failure
If you've exhausted every software and cable check and the console remains totally silent with zero LED activity, the internal PSU may have failed. The Slim's power supply is a known failure point after a few years of use, especially if the console was plugged into an unreliable outlet or power strip.
Replacing the PSU on the Slim is doable if you're comfortable with basic disassembly. You'll need a Torx screwdriver set. Replacement units run about $50 to $70 from parts suppliers. If you're not comfortable opening the console and working near the power supply, a local repair shop can swap one out in about 20 minutes.
