When the predictive text on your Nothing Phone 2a stops working, it can really slow you down. You might find it's not suggesting the next word, the autocorrect is making strange changes, or the whole keyboard feels a bit off. The good news is, this is usually a software hiccup that you can fix yourself.
Restart Your Phone 2a
This is the quickest thing to try and often solves the problem right away. A simple restart clears out temporary glitches in the system that might be affecting the keyboard. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart."
If the screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart. Press and hold the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds until you feel a vibration and see the Nothing logo appear on the screen.
Check Your Keyboard Settings
Sometimes the predictive text feature gets turned off by accident, or a recent update changed a setting. Open the Settings app and go to System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard.
Inside Gboard's settings, tap on "Text correction." Here, make sure the switch next to "Show suggestion strip" is turned on. This is what controls the word predictions above the keyboard.
While you're there, scroll down a bit and also check that "Next-word suggestions" is enabled. This helps the keyboard learn how you type and predict your next word more accurately.
Clear Gboard's Cache and Data
If a restart didn't help, the next step is to clear the keyboard app's temporary files. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find and tap on "Gboard" in your list of apps.
Tap on "Storage & cache." First, tap "Clear cache." This removes temporary data that could be corrupted without affecting your personal dictionary or settings. If the problem continues, go back to that same screen.
This time, tap "Clear storage" or "Clear data." A warning will pop up because this will reset Gboard to its default settings. You'll lose any saved custom words and your keyboard preferences, but it can clear out deeper corruption.
Update Gboard and Your System
An outdated version of the keyboard app can cause issues with features like prediction. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to "Manage apps & device." Look for updates, and see if Gboard is listed. If it is, tap "Update."
It's also a good idea to check for a system update. Nothing OS updates often include bug fixes for core components. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." If an update is available, install it.
Re-add or Switch Your Language
Predictive text needs the correct language pack to work. In Gboard settings, go to Languages. Make sure your primary language (like English) is listed and downloaded.
If it's already there, try removing it and adding it back. Tap on the language, then "Remove." After that, tap "Add keyboard" and re-add your language, making sure to download the latest version.
Try a Different Keyboard Temporarily
To figure out if the issue is with Gboard specifically or something deeper in the system, install another keyboard like Microsoft SwiftKey from the Play Store. After installing, go to Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard and enable it.
When you go to type somewhere, you'll see a keyboard icon in your bottom toolbar. Tap it to switch to the new keyboard and test if predictive text works there. If it does, the problem is isolated to Gboard, and a full reinstall might be needed.
