Sony's Ghost of Yotei has surpassed its predecessor's launch sales pace, delivering stronger early performance than 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. The PlayStation 5 exclusive reached 3.3 million units in its first month, exceeding the original's 2.4 million three-day debut.

CFO Lin Tao confirmed the sales milestone during Sony's Q3 FY2025 earnings presentation.

"Ghost of Yotei, a tentpole title we released in October, exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time," Tao stated.

The executive noted the sequel "significantly contributed to the financial results of the quarter."

The sales achievement comes despite platform differences. Ghost of Tsushima launched on PlayStation 4 during summer 2020, when the console had reached approximately 110 million lifetime sales. Ghost of Yotei debuted on PlayStation 5, which currently stands at 92.2 million units shipped according to Sony's latest figures.

For context, the Nintendo Switch has become the company's best-selling console ever with over 155 million units sold.

Pricing also factors into the revenue comparison. Ghost of Yotei carries a $70 standard edition price point, while Ghost of Tsushima launched at $60 in 2020. This $10 increase amplifies the sequel's revenue impact beyond unit sales alone.

Industry tracking data from Circana shows Ghost of Yotei ranked as the third-best-selling PlayStation title in the United States during 2025. The game placed 11th overall across all platforms in the same market.

Ghost of Tsushima established strong long-term performance, reaching 5 million units within four months of its July 2020 launch. The original title eventually surpassed 13 million copies sold by August 2024, including PlayStation 5 Director's Cut and PC versions.

Sony's latest earnings report shows PlayStation 5 sales have reached 92.2 million units, maintaining pace with PlayStation 4's lifecycle trajectory. The console experienced a 15.8% year-over-year decline in quarterly shipments, reflecting typical hardware cycle patterns.

This comes as Microsoft plans major Xbox franchise releases on PlayStation in 2026, marking a historic shift in console exclusivity.

The company highlighted Ghost of Yotei alongside established live service titles Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show as key revenue contributors. These games provide "stable recurring revenue" according to Tao's presentation.

Ghost of Yotei launched October 2, 2025, continuing Sucker Punch Productions' samurai action series. The sequel shifts focus to protagonist Atsu, a wandering mercenary seeking revenge against the Yotei Six faction.

Sony plans to expand Ghost of Yotei's reach with a multiplayer Legends mode scheduled for release later this year. The cooperative component follows the successful Ghost of Tsushima: Legends addition that launched post-release for the original title.

The sales performance suggests strong franchise momentum despite platform transition challenges. With PlayStation 5 approaching 100 million units and potential PC releases following the established pattern, Ghost of Yotei appears positioned for continued commercial success.
