A rare 1996 shoot 'em up that saw limited European distribution arrives on modern consoles tomorrow as part of Hamster's new preservation initiative.

Sonic Wings Special, known as Aero Fighters in Western markets, launches March 12 for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 at $11.99.

The vertical-scrolling shooter originally debuted on PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn nearly three decades ago, featuring a multinational cast of pilots battling a secret organization called Fata Morgana. The re-release marks the fifth entry in Hamster's Console Archives series, which began last month as a companion to the company's long-running Arcade Archives program.

Unlike its arcade-focused sibling, Console Archives specifically targets classic home console games that have become difficult to access on modern hardware.

Hamster's version includes contemporary quality-of-life features absent from the original release. Players gain customizable button layouts, rapid-fire settings, multiple save points, and visual filters that replicate CRT monitor aesthetics. The package also supports screen layout adjustments for different display preferences.

Sonic Wings Special combines elements from all three Sonic Wings arcade titles into a single home console experience. Players select from 26 fighter ships across nine branching stages that change based on random choices and player decisions, creating multiple possible endings.

The European PlayStation version was particularly scarce following its limited budget release through publisher Phoenix Games in 2004. While the game previously appeared on PlayStation Network for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita platforms, this marks its first availability on current-generation systems.

Console Archives has already reissued NES titles Ninja Gaiden 2, Dezaemon, and Nobunaga's Ambition alongside PlayStation game Cool Boarders earlier this year. Future confirmed releases include the 1986 Famicom game Doraemon, never officially available outside Japan, and PS1 title Monster Rancher Hop-A-Bout.

Hamster Corporation celebrated its 500th Arcade Archives release in December by making Space Invaders available on Christmas Day. The company now applies that same preservation philosophy to console libraries through its newest archival project.
