Google extended Pixel Tablet software support through June 2028, adding two years to the device's original update schedule. The change brings Google's lone tablet in line with its current smartphone update policy.
The Pixel Tablet launched in 2023 with three years of promised Android OS updates. Google quietly updated its support page this week to show both OS and security updates continuing until June 2028, according to 9to5Google. Previously, OS updates were scheduled to end this June.
Google now provides five years of total updates for the Pixel Tablet, matching the support period for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series devices. The company extended those phones' update schedules in late 2024, bringing them to five years of both OS and security updates.
The Pixel Tablet extension arrives as Google reportedly canceled plans for a Pixel Tablet 2. Multiple sources indicate the company has no immediate plans for tablet hardware follow-ups, making extended software support the primary path for maintaining the existing user base.
Google's current flagship phones receive even longer support. Pixel 8 series devices launched in 2023 with seven years of promised updates, a policy that continues through the Pixel 9 series. The Pixel Tablet's Tensor G2 chipset should handle the extended update cycle without performance issues.
Android 17, expected later this year, will reach Pixel Tablet owners through the extended support window. The device will also continue receiving quarterly Pixel Feature Drops that bring new software capabilities to Google hardware.
The update extension represents a significant shift for a device that struggled commercially. The Pixel Tablet reportedly struggled commercially and never gained substantial market share against established rivals like Samsung and Apple, with Google's hardware focus remaining on smartphones and foldables.
Google's support page confirms the Pixel Tablet will receive "five years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops." The policy applies from when the device first became available in the Google Store.
Pixel Tablet owners don't need to take any action to receive the extended updates. The device will continue receiving over-the-air updates automatically through the new June 2028 cutoff date.
The move follows broader industry trends toward longer device support cycles. Samsung offers four years of OS updates for recent Galaxy devices, while Apple typically provides five to six years of iOS updates for iPhones. Google's seven-year promise for current Pixels leads the Android market.
For Pixel Tablet owners, the extension means continued access to security patches and new Android features through mid-2028. The device will remain current through at least Android 18, based on Google's annual Android release schedule.
The software support extension doesn't change Google's apparent exit from the tablet market. The company's last tablet hardware release remains the 2023 Pixel Tablet, with no successor announced or expected in the near term.
Google's decision to extend Pixel Tablet updates suggests a commitment to existing customers despite the device's limited commercial success. The move aligns with the company's broader emphasis on software longevity across its Pixel hardware lineup.
