When your MSI Stealth 16's camera shows a black screen or isn't detected by Zoom or Teams, it can derail a meeting in seconds. The fix is usually a quick setting or software update, not a hardware failure.

Check the Physical Privacy Shutter

First, look at the top bezel of your screen where the camera is located. The Stealth 16 has a built-in privacy shutter you can slide to cover the lens. Make sure it's slid all the way open so the camera eye is completely uncovered. It's an easy thing to miss if you've been traveling or moving the laptop around.

Grant App Permission in Windows

Windows privacy settings can block camera access. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Ensure "Camera access" and "Let apps access your camera" are both turned on. Scroll down to the list of apps and make sure the toggle is enabled for the specific app you're using, like Microsoft Teams or Google Chrome.

Test with the Windows Camera App

Open the Camera app from your Start menu. If the camera works perfectly here, then the hardware is fine and the problem is isolated to your video call software. If the Camera app also shows a black screen or an error, the issue is system-wide and we need to look deeper.

Update Your Camera Drivers

Outdated drivers are a common culprit. Press the Windows key, type "Device Manager," and open it. Expand the "Cameras" or "Imaging devices" section. Right-click on your webcam (it might be listed as "Integrated Camera" or "IR Camera") and select "Update driver." Choose "Search automatically for drivers."

If Windows says you have the best driver, I'd visit the official MSI support site. Enter your Stealth 16 model, go to the driver downloads, and look for a "Camera" or "IR Camera" driver. Download and install it directly from there for the most reliable fix.

Run a Quick Restart

Close all your apps, especially any video software, and restart your Stealth 16. This clears any temporary software glitches and releases the camera if it was stuck being used by a background process. It's a simple step that resolves a lot of random hardware detection issues.

Check for Conflicts in MSI Center

Open the MSI Center application. Some user scenarios or performance profiles can affect peripheral functions. Try switching your profile to Balanced mode if you're in something like Extreme Performance. Also, look for any camera-specific settings or optimizations within the MSI Center modules that might be interfering.

Reinstall the Camera Driver Completely

If updating didn't work, a clean reinstall might. Go back to Device Manager, right-click on your camera under "Cameras," and select "Uninstall device." Check the box that says "Attempt to remove the driver software for this device" if it appears. Restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall a fresh driver upon reboot.

Install All Windows Updates

Head to Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for updates." Install any available feature or quality updates. After that, click on "Advanced options" and then "Optional updates." There's often a driver update for the camera listed here that doesn't get installed automatically.

Reset the Problem App

If the camera works in the Windows Camera app but not in, say, Zoom, reset that specific app. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app (e.g., Zoom), click the three dots, and select "Advanced options." Click the "Reset" button. This clears the app's cache and permissions without affecting your account data.
