When your Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15 suddenly goes silent, it's a jarring experience. The issue could be a simple volume setting, a driver conflict, or a deeper system problem. Let's walk through the steps to get your sound back.
Check the Volume and Output
First, look at the speaker icon in your taskbar. Click it and make sure the master volume slider isn't at zero or muted. Right next to the volume slider, you'll see the name of the current output device. If you recently unplugged headphones, Windows might still be trying to send audio to them. Click that name and select your laptop's speakers from the list.
Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in tool that can automatically find and fix common sound problems. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find the Playing Audio troubleshooter and click Run. It will check for issues like disabled services or incorrect default devices and often resolves them on the spot.
Restart Your IdeaPad
This is the classic fix for a reason. A full restart reloads all your audio drivers and clears any stuck processes. Click Start > Power > Restart. I've found this is particularly effective if the sound stopped working right after a Windows update or when waking the laptop from sleep mode.
Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers
Press the Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Expand the section labeled Sound, video and game controllers. You'll likely see "Realtek Audio" or something similar. Right-click on it and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
If that doesn't help, try a clean reinstall. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device again and select Uninstall device. Check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" if it appears, then restart your laptop. Windows will install a fresh, default driver when it boots back up.
Use Lenovo Vantage for System Updates
Your IdeaPad 5 15 came with Lenovo Vantage, which is a hub for all your system updates. Open the Lenovo Vantage app and check for updates. It can provide specific audio driver and BIOS updates from Lenovo that the generic Windows update might miss. This one-click tool often resolves hardware compatibility issues.
Check App-Specific Volume Mixer
Sometimes, the system volume is fine, but a specific app is muted. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Open Volume mixer. You'll see individual volume sliders for every open application. Make sure the app you're trying to use (like your web browser or media player) isn't set to zero.
Disable Audio Enhancements
Audio enhancement features can sometimes conflict and cause sound to cut out. Go to Settings > System > Sound. Click on your speaker output device, then scroll down to find Audio enhancements. Try setting this to Off to see if it restores normal audio playback.
Restart the Windows Audio Services
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter. In the Services window, scroll down and find Windows Audio. Right-click it and select Restart. Do the same for the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service. If either service was hung or stopped, this will get them running again immediately.
Check for Physical and Port Issues
If you're using headphones or external speakers, test them on another device to rule out a problem with the accessory itself. Try plugging headphones into the 3.5mm jack on your IdeaPad. If sound works through headphones but not the built-in speakers, it points to a software or driver issue with the internal speakers, not a complete audio failure.
Roll Back a Problematic Driver Update
If the sound stopped working right after a recent driver update, you can revert to the previous version. Go back to Device Manager, double-click your audio device, and go to the Driver tab. If the Roll Back Driver button is clickable, select it. This will uninstall the new update and reinstall the driver version that was working before.
