When your HP Spectre x360 14 suddenly goes silent, it's a jarring experience. The audio might cut out from the speakers, fail to play through headphones, or just disappear entirely. It's usually a quick software setting or driver issue, but here's how to systematically get your sound back.

Check the Volume and Output

First, click the speaker icon in your taskbar's system tray. Make sure the master volume slider isn't all the way down or muted. More importantly, click the small arrow next to the slider to see the output device list. If you recently unplugged headphones, Windows might still be trying to send audio to that disconnected device. Select your laptop's speakers from the list.

Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in tool for this. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find the Playing Audio troubleshooter and click Run. It will automatically check for common problems like disabled services or incorrect default devices and often fixes them on the spot.

Restart Your Spectre

This is the classic fix for a reason. A full restart reloads all your audio drivers and clears any stuck processes. Click Start > Power > Restart. I've found this especially effective if the audio stopped working right after a Windows update or when waking the laptop from sleep mode.

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

Press Windows + X and choose Device Manager. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section. Right-click your audio device (it's often Realtek Audio or something similar) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. If that doesn't work, right-click it again and choose Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall a fresh, default driver.

Use HP Support Assistant

For a Spectre-specific approach, open the HP Support Assistant app. It can check for driver updates that are specifically validated for your exact model, which sometimes differ from the generic ones Windows Update provides. Run a diagnostic check through it as well, as it can test your audio hardware directly.

Check the App Volume Mixer

Sometimes the system volume is fine, but a specific app is muted. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Open Volume mixer. You'll see individual volume sliders for every open application. Make sure the app you're trying to use (like your browser or media player) isn't set to zero or muted here.

Disable Audio Enhancements

Audio processing features can sometimes conflict and cause sound to drop out. Go to Settings > System > Sound. Click on your output device (the Spectre's speakers), then scroll down and click Audio enhancements. Try setting this to Off to see if it resolves the issue.

Restart the Windows Audio Service

Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter. In the long list, find Windows Audio. Right-click it and select Restart. Do the same for the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service just below it. This forces the core audio components to reload.

Check for Physical and Connection Issues

If you're using headphones or external speakers, test them on another device to rule them out. Try a different pair with your Spectre. Inspect the headphone jack for any debris. Also, ensure the laptop isn't in a mode that disables speakers, like tablet or tent mode, though Windows should handle this automatically.

Roll Back a Problematic Driver Update

If the audio stopped right after a driver update, you can revert it. Go back to Device Manager, double-click your audio device, and go to the Driver tab. If the Roll Back Driver button is clickable, use it. This reinstalls the previous driver version that was working.
