Recording your iPhone SE 4's screen is a fantastic way to create a quick tutorial, save a memorable video call, or capture a high score in a game. The feature is built directly into iOS 18, and I've found it's one of the most useful tools for sharing exactly what's on your display. Setting it up takes less than a minute.

Add the Screen Recording Button to Control Center

First, you need to make the screen recording shortcut accessible. On your iPhone SE 4, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Press and hold on any empty space between the icons until they start to jiggle. Tap the Add a Control button at the bottom.

Search for "Screen Recording" or scroll until you find the icon that looks like a solid circle inside another circle. Tap the green + next to it. The button will now appear in your active Control Center, ready to use from any app or home screen.

Start Recording Your Screen

To begin, swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center again. Simply tap the new Screen Recording button. You'll see a three-second countdown, which gives you time to switch back to the app or screen you want to capture.

Once the countdown finishes, the button in Control Center will turn red. A red recording indicator will also appear in your Dynamic Island or status bar at the top of the screen. Everything you do and see on the display from this point is being saved to your camera roll.

How to Record Your Voice with the Screen

By default, the recording only picks up system sounds from your phone. If you want to add your own narration or commentary, you need to enable the microphone. Don't just tap the button. Instead, press and hold the Screen Recording button in Control Center.

A small menu will pop up. At the bottom, you'll see a Microphone toggle. Tap it to turn it on (it will highlight in blue). Then, tap Start Recording. Now, your voice and any ambient noise will be included in the video file alongside the screen activity.

Stop and Save Your Recording

To end the recording, you have two easy options. The quickest way is to tap the red recording indicator at the top of your screen and then tap Stop. Alternatively, you can open Control Center and tap the red Screen Recording button again.

Your iPhone SE 4 will process the video for a moment, and then it will save automatically to your Photos app. You can find it in the main "Recents" album and also in the "Videos" album under Media Types.

Trim and Edit the Video

Screen recordings often include the few seconds where you opened Control Center. You can easily trim these parts. Open the video in the Photos app and tap Edit in the top-right corner.

You'll see a timeline at the bottom. Drag the handles on either end to select just the portion you want to keep. When you're done, tap Done. You can choose to save the changes to the original video or save it as a new, trimmed clip.

Share Your Screen Recording

From the Photos app, open your recording and tap the share button (the square with an arrow pointing up). You can AirDrop it to a Mac or another iPhone, send it via Messages or Mail, or upload it directly to social media platforms.

For very long recordings, the file size can be large. If you have trouble sending it, you might need to use the iMovie app (free from the App Store) to compress it or create a shorter highlight reel before sharing.

Understanding Recording Limitations

The screen recorder works with almost all apps, but there are some protections in place. Most streaming video apps, like Netflix, Disney+, or Apple TV+, will block recording during playback. You'll typically see a black screen where the video should be, though the app's interface will still record.

This is a copyright feature to prevent piracy. Your own photos, web browsing, games, and standard apps will record perfectly. If you're ever unsure, just try it. The recorder will work, but protected content may appear as a blank space.

Use Recordings for Tech Support

If you encounter a weird bug or a persistent error message on your iPhone SE 4, a screen recording is the best way to show someone the problem. It's much clearer than trying to describe it in an email or text.

You can record the glitch happening and then send the video directly to Apple Support or post it in a forum. Seeing the issue in action makes it significantly easier for others to diagnose and help you find a solution.
