Screen recording on your iPad mini is a handy way to capture tutorials, save video calls, or record gameplay moments. It's built directly into iPadOS and is ready to use after a quick setup. I've found it's one of the most useful features for showing someone how to do something on their own device.
Add the Screen Recording Button to Control Center
First, you need to make sure the screen recording control is in your Control Center. On your iPad mini, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen. Press and hold on any empty area within the Control Center panel.
You'll see an option to Add a Control. Tap it, then search for or find the Screen Recording button. Tap the green + icon next to it to add it. The button, which looks like a solid circle inside a ring, will now appear in your Control Center for easy access from any app.
Start Recording Your Screen
To begin, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Simply tap the Screen Recording button. You'll see a three-second countdown, which gives you time to navigate to the app or screen you want to capture.
Once the countdown finishes, the button in Control Center will turn red, and a red indicator will appear in your iPad's status bar. Everything displayed on your screen from that moment forward is being recorded directly to your Photos library.
Include Your Voice with Microphone Audio
The default setting records your iPad's system sounds but not your voice. If you're creating a tutorial or commentary, you'll want to enable the microphone. Instead of just tapping the Screen Recording button, press and hold it.
A small menu will pop up. At the bottom, you'll see a Microphone toggle. Tap it to turn it on (it will show a red icon), then tap Start Recording. Now, your narration and any ambient sound will be captured along with the screen video.
Stop and Save Your Recording
To stop, you can tap the red status indicator at the top of your screen and select Stop. Alternatively, open Control Center again and tap the red Screen Recording button. The recording will process for a moment and then save automatically to the Photos app, in the Videos album.
It's a good idea to trim the start and end of your clip, as it usually captures you opening and closing Control Center. In the Photos app, open the video, tap Edit, and drag the handles on the timeline at the bottom to crop it. Tap Done to save your edits.
Share Your Screen Recording
From the Photos app, open your recording and tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up). You can AirDrop it to another Apple device, send it via Messages or Mail, or upload it to a cloud service. For very long recordings, the file size can be large, so sharing via a link from iCloud Drive is often easier than email.
Understanding Recording Limitations
While you can record most apps and games, protected content will usually block recording. Streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+ will typically display a black screen during playback in your recording. This is a digital rights management (DRM) restriction to prevent piracy. Your own content, web browsing, and most other apps will record without any issue.
Use Recordings for Help and Troubleshooting
If you encounter a weird bug or an app that's not behaving, recording the screen is the best way to document it. You can then show the exact problem to Apple Support or post it in a forum. It's far more effective than trying to explain a complex visual glitch in words.
