When YouTube stops working on your PS5, you might see a frozen app, videos that buffer forever, or a sign-in screen that won't let you through. Start with a restart and a quick look at service status. Then move to the fixes that match your symptoms, because connection problems, account errors and missing sound each need a different fix.
Start with a restart and service checks
Run through these quick checks before you change any console settings.
- 1.Close YouTube and open it again.
- 2.If it still fails, press the PS button to open the control center, select Power, then choose Restart PS5.
- 3.On a phone or computer, open status.playstation.com/en-us/ to check PlayStation service status. A disruption there can affect downloads, PlayStation sign-in or broadcasting, but it won't tell you whether YouTube itself is down.
- 4.Check the official announcements in YouTube Help for playback or sign-in incidents on TVs and game consoles. If one confirms an issue that affects you, wait for it to be fixed.
Fix videos that buffer or won't load
Buffering and interrupted playback often come from an unstable connection or not enough bandwidth.
First, test the connection. Open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. A passing test means the console can get online, but it doesn't prove YouTube is working.
Next, turn off your modem or router for at least five minutes, then turn it back on.
Then reconnect to Wi-Fi through Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select your network and choose Connect. If your network isn't listed, use Set Up Manually.
It also helps to move the PS5 and router closer together and clear anything between them.
A cable connection is another option. Run a LAN cable from the console to the router, then open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
Pause other downloads or streams on your network. Google recommends about 5 Mbps for 1080p, and Sony specifies a stable 25 Mbps for YouTube in 4K on PS5.
You can also lower the resolution. In the player, open Settings > Quality and pick a lower option for that video.
Finally, try a different video, or open YouTube on another device on the same network. That shows whether the problem is one video or a wider playback or connection issue.
Bring the app and console software up to date
Highlight YouTube, press the options button on your controller and select Check for Update. The app also checks for its latest version every time you open it.
To check the console, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and look for Up to date. If an update is available, install it from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.
If the system update download fails, press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads. Select the system software update, then choose View Error Info > Try Again.
If the app and console are both up to date and YouTube still fails, reinstall the app next.
Reinstall YouTube when it keeps crashing
If YouTube keeps failing to launch or didn't install properly, delete it and install it again.
- 1.Select the YouTube app, press the options button and choose Delete.
- 2.From the home screen, open Media > All Apps > YouTube.
- 3.Select Download to reinstall the app.
- 4.Open YouTube and sign into your Google account again.
Refresh your Google account sign-in
Use these steps for an old session that's stopped working, the wrong account, or an activation code that won't go through.
Open YouTube's left menu, select your profile picture, open Accounts and choose Guest to test normal playback. Guest mode can't play videos that need an eligible signed-in account.
If videos play in Guest mode, select your account from the profile menu and choose Sign out.
On the console, choose Sign in with your phone.
Scan the QR code, or go to yt.be/activate on a phone, tablet or computer and enter the code shown on your PS5.
If signing in with your phone fails, connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the PS5 rather than using mobile data.
Before you try again, make sure you entered the activation code exactly as it appears on screen.
If the session still won't work, open YouTube's Settings and use the option to reset the app. A reset signs you out, so sign in again afterward.
Check restrictions when only some videos are blocked
Open Settings from YouTube's left menu and check Restricted Mode. Only turn it off if you're allowed to.
If your adult account has the wrong birthday, open your Google Account and select Personal info > Birthday. Enter your correct birthday and select Save. Signed-out viewers and users under 18 can't watch age-restricted videos.
Complete any age verification Google asks for, then sign into YouTube again.
For a PlayStation child account, the family manager or guardian should open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management and select the child to review the app and service restrictions.
For a supervised Google account, a parent should check which YouTube content the child is allowed to watch in Family Link. Supervised accounts work on PlayStation, but their restrictions still apply.
On a school or work Google account, or on a filtered network, ask the administrator in charge to review YouTube access and content restrictions.
Tip: A blocked video can come from an account or network restriction even when the YouTube app itself is working fine.
Restore missing sound or picture
If the MUTE button on your controller is blinking, press it again to turn the sound back on. Check the volume on your TV or headset too, then make sure sound is going to the right place under Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device.
If the picture drops out or HDMI audio cuts out, reconnect the HDMI cable firmly. Try another HDMI cable or a different HDMI port on the TV, and make sure the TV is set to the right input. Plug the PS5 straight into the display instead of going through a receiver, soundbar or capture device.
If the display doesn't support the current output, set Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution to Automatic.
If the problems continue, turn off the PS5 and the display completely, unplug both for 20 minutes, then plug them back in. Wait until the PS5 power light is fully off before you unplug it.
If the picture or sound is still wrong after that, contact PlayStation Support. Signing into YouTube again won't fix it.
Clear the system cache for wider console problems
Try this for console feature or performance problems when restarting, updating and reinstalling haven't worked.
Turn off the console by holding its power button for three seconds.
When the console is off, hold the power button again and let go after the second beep, about seven seconds later.
Connect the controller with a USB cable and press its PS button.
In Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. This clears the PS5's system cache.
Once the console restarts, test YouTube again.
If you also have problems with content indexing or app updates, go back into Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.
Get help when the problem persists
A full power cycle is one more way to fix playback. Press the PS button, select Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait until the power light is completely off. Unplug the console for 30 seconds, plug it back in, then start the PS5 and test YouTube again.
If the YouTube app problem continues, send feedback at youtube.com/tv_feedback from a phone, tablet or computer. Include your PS5 model, the app and system software versions, the exact error message and the steps that cause the problem.
If that doesn't solve it, contact PlayStation Support about ongoing installation, launch, storage or console problems. Have the exact error code and a list of the fixes you've tried ready. Resetting the PS5 deletes all user data, so save it as a last resort for wider console problems and don't use it for a problem that only affects YouTube.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does linking YouTube in PS5 settings sign me into the viewing app?
No. Linking YouTube under Settings > Users and Accounts on your PS5 is for sharing and broadcasting gameplay. To watch with your account, sign into your Google account inside the YouTube app.
Can I clear YouTube's cache like I would on Android?
The PS5 option is Clear System Software Cache in Safe Mode. It clears the console's system cache. Sony doesn't document a separate cache option for the YouTube app, so if the app itself keeps misbehaving, delete it and reinstall it instead.
Why does YouTube work but not play in 4K?
Sony specifies a stable 25 Mbps connection for YouTube 4K on PS5, and the video and your equipment also have to support 4K. To see the actual playback resolution, open Settings > Show Video Info > Enabled in YouTube and look for 3840 x 2160.
Can PS VR2 play immersive 360-degree YouTube videos?
No. You can watch YouTube on PS VR2 in cinematic mode, but YouTube doesn't support 360-degree videos on PS VR2. Watch those on your regular display instead.
