Instagram links break in different places. A Reel opens in the browser instead of the app, a website stalls inside Instagram, a bio link disappears, or a password reset link leads nowhere. Start with the path that matches where the tap fails, then use the exact phone, browser, or Instagram setting that controls it.
1. Start with the quickest app refresh
When links stopped working suddenly, refresh the app before changing deeper link settings.
On iPhone or iPad, close Instagram from the app switcher, reopen it, then restart the device if Instagram still freezes or refuses to open links.
Next, update Instagram on iPhone or iPad from App Store > profile icon > App Updates > Instagram > Update.
On Android, update Instagram from Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available > See details > Instagram > Update.
Then open the official Instagram store page and choose Update, Install, or Open, depending on the button shown.
If downloads or pages stall on Android while Data Saver is active, go to Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data, then allow Instagram, Google Play Store, or your browser.
2. Make Android send Instagram links to Instagram
- 1.Open Settings on your Android phone.
- 2.Go to Apps > Instagram.
- 3.Tap Open by default.
- 4.Turn on Open supported links.
- 5.Under Links to open in this app, select the Instagram domains shown on your phone.
Use this when profiles, posts, or Reels open in a browser or another app instead of Instagram.
Android labels differ by manufacturer, but the path runs through the Instagram app settings. Do not use old Meta App Manager link-setting instructions as the fix.
3. Clear the app that hijacked the link
If the wrong browser or app keeps taking Instagram links, remove that default and choose again.
Go to Settings > Apps > the browser or app opening Instagram links incorrectly > Open by default > Clear default preferences.
After that, tap the Instagram link again, then choose Instagram when Android asks what to use.
For links that belong on the web, set your preferred browser from Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app, then choose Chrome, Samsung Browser, Firefox, Edge, or another browser you use.
4. Wipe Instagram in-app browser data
Open any website link inside the Instagram app.
Tap Options in the top right.
Open Browser settings.
Tap Clear cookies and cache > Clear browsing data.
Use Instagram's browser controls when a website opens inside Instagram but loads blank, loops, or shows stale information.
Stay on Browser settings for two more link controls.
Turn Allow link history off or clear link history when old in-app browser state keeps returning.
Toggle Safe website browsing when Instagram's safety browser layer is affecting the website link.
5. Fix instagram.com in Chrome or Safari
Test Instagram in a current browser first when the same link fails on the web.
Open instagram.com in the latest version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge, log in, then open the profile, post, Reel, or link again.
On Android Chrome, clear stale browser data from Chrome > More > Delete browsing data > choose a duration > Delete data.
For more control, open More options, select the data types, then tap Delete data.
On iPhone or iPad Safari, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data > Clear History.
Then check Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript and turn it on.
6. Reinstall Instagram when storage data is broken
Move to reinstalling after updates, restarts, and browser cleanup fail.
On Android, clear the app cache from Settings > Apps > See all apps > Instagram > Storage & cache > Clear cache.
On Android, use Clear data or Delete data only when you know your Instagram sign-in details.
To reinstall a deleted Android app, open Google Play > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Manage > This device > Not installed > Instagram > Install.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Instagram, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.
Redownload Instagram from the App Store.
If Delete App or App Store installs are blocked on iPhone, check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps and Deleting Apps.
Set each one to Allow when you control those settings.
7. Use the web fallback for broken mobile links
Open the same content on the web when Instagram's app route keeps failing: go to instagram.com or instagram.com/accounts/login, log in with your Instagram username and password, then open the link, profile, post, or Reel there.
This does not repair Android App Links or Instagram's in-app browser. It gives you a working route to the content while you finish the phone-side fixes above.
8. Repair your own bio and Story links
Use Instagram's current link surfaces if your own link is missing, placed in the wrong area, or not clickable.
For a profile website link, open Instagram and go to Profile or your profile picture > Edit profile > Links > Add link.
Enter the website URL, then save it.
For a clickable Story link, create a story, tap Stickers, choose the Link sticker, enter the URL, place the sticker, then share the story.
Do not follow old Story Swipe Up instructions.
Instagram no longer supports adding Swipe Up links to Stories; the current method is the Link sticker.
9. Challenge blocked links or replace reset emails
Open Profile > menu > Account Status > Removed content, select the removed content, tap Request a review, choose a reason, and submit it when Instagram removed or blocked your link content.
Teen accounts should also check Profile > Edit profile > Links and Account Status, then remove or replace websites Instagram flags as sensitive or not age-appropriate.
For an expired or broken Instagram password reset link, request a new password reset email from Instagram's login or password reset flow.
Use the newest message and choose reset your Instagram password inside that email.
If the email does not arrive, open your email app's Spam or Junk folder, look for the Instagram reset email, then request another reset email.
On a work or school Android phone, app updates are controlled through the organization's Managed Google Play setup.
Ask the device administrator to update Instagram through its managed app controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Instagram links open in my browser instead of the app?
On Android, turn on Open supported links for Instagram under Settings > Apps > Instagram > Open by default. If another app already grabbed the link, clear that app's default preferences and tap the Instagram link again.
Can I force every Instagram in-app browser link to open externally?
Instagram does not document an official setting for forcing every in-app browser link to open externally. Use phone default-browser settings for normal web links and Instagram Browser settings for in-app browser data.
Why is my Instagram Story link not clickable?
Use the Link sticker from the Story sticker menu. Swipe Up is no longer the current Instagram Story link method.
What fixes an Instagram password reset link that does not work?
Request a new reset email and use the newest message. Check Spam or Junk if it does not arrive, then request another reset email.
