Discord does not use one universal always-on-top switch for every screen. The fix changes based on whether you want a call, a stream, an in-game overlay, or the full Discord window to stay visible. Start with Discord's own controls, then use Windows pinning tools when you need the main app window above other apps.
Use Discord Pop Out for calls and streams
Open or join the Discord DM or server video call you want to keep visible.
Press Pop Out View to move the call into its own floating window.
Press Stay On Top inside the pop-out window.
Press Remove from Top when you want normal window behavior again.
For Go Live or screen share, open the stream view.
Press the Pop Out icon.
Press Stay On Top.
Discord is testing a newer video-call layout for some users, so use the same pop-out and pin controls even if the buttons sit in a different spot.
Turn on Game Overlay for Discord over games
This fixes Discord not staying visible while you play on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Open Discord and click the User Settings cogwheel next to your username.
Go to Overlay.
Turn Enable Overlay on.
Launch the game again.
Use Discord through the in-game overlay instead of the main Discord window.
Discord Game Overlay does not work on macOS or Linux.
Keep Discord messages and voice users visible
Once the overlay is enabled, open User Settings and go to Game Overlay. Turn Messages on to show Discord messages in game.
For voice chat, set Display Users to Always. Set Display Names to Always and choose Large or Small under Avatar Size if you want names and avatar sizing locked in.
With a game running, press the overlay keybind, which is Shift + ` by default. Press the pin icon for the overlay window you want visible; a blurple-colored icon means that panel is set to show.
If this method fails, change the game's display mode to windowed or borderless windowed and open the overlay again.
Change fullscreen games to borderless windowed
The current revamped Discord overlay works in Windowed Fullscreen and Windowed Borderless Fullscreen, not true fullscreen.
Open the game's video or display settings. Choose Windowed, Borderless Windowed, or Windowed Fullscreen, then return to the game and bring up the Discord overlay again.
Older instructions point to Discord's Legacy Overlay for true fullscreen, but that option exists only while Discord keeps it available. Use borderless windowed mode as the current fix.
Fix muted chats and Streamer Mode
The most common cause of message overlays not showing is a muted server, DM, or group, or Streamer Mode being enabled.
Open the affected server, DM, or group.
Confirm it is not muted.
Open Discord's Streamer Mode setting and turn it off when you want message overlays in game.
Go back to User Settings and open Game Overlay.
Confirm Messages is still on.
Install Discord System Helper when keybinds fail
If Discord offers System Helper on Windows, use it when overlay shortcuts or keybinds do not register in elevated games.
- 1.Open the Discord settings area that shows the helper prompt, such as Game Overlay, Keybinds, Voice & Video, or Window Settings.
- 2.Press Install when Discord offers Discord System Helper.
- 3.Follow the Windows prompts and grant administrator permissions.
- 4.Let Discord System Helper install in the background.
- 5.Test the overlay keybind again in the game.
This feature is experimental and available only for some Windows desktop users. To remove it later, go to User Settings, open Windows Settings, and press Uninstall.
Pin the Discord window with PowerToys
Install Microsoft PowerToys from GitHub, the Microsoft Store, or with winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget.
Open the Discord window or Discord pop-out window you want to pin.
Press Win + Ctrl + T to turn Always On Top on for that window.
Press Win + Ctrl + T again, or close the window, to unpin it.
If the shortcut does nothing, open PowerToys Settings, go to Always On Top, and check Activation shortcut, Do not activate when Game Mode is on, and Excluded apps.
PowerToys works on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004, 20H1, build 19041 or newer, on x64 or ARM64 PCs.
Use Android Mobile Voice Overlay
On Android, Discord keeps voice controls over other apps with Mobile Voice Overlay. Open the Discord Android app and go to Settings, then Voice & Video, then turn on Enable Mobile Voice Overlay.
Approve the Android system permission that lets Discord draw on top. Discord lists this feature for Discord Android Version 9.4.5 and describes it as Android-only.
To hide the overlay bubble without leaving the call, drag it to the X at the bottom of the screen. To leave the call, tap the hangup button inside the expanded overlay or inside Discord.
Clean reinstall Discord on Windows
A corrupt or outdated Discord install breaks desktop workflows around screen share, streaming, and overlay use. Close Discord from the system tray and make sure all Discord processes are terminated.
Press Start + R, enter %appdata%, and delete the Discord folder. Press Start + R again, enter %localappdata%, and delete the Discord folder there too.
Restart your PC, then reinstall Discord from the official Discord download page.
