Trying to tell whether someone is active on Snapchat? The green dot, opened messages, and Story views tell you different things, and recent activity doesn’t mean someone is online right now. Here’s how to read each clue and check for presence in your conversation.
Start with the green dot
Look for a green dot on the person’s avatar. It means they have been active recently, not that they are online at that moment.
Snapchat does not specify an exact window for “recently.” The dot gives you no precise last-active time, and it does not establish that someone used Snapchat within the last 24 hours.
The dot depends on the person’s Activity Indicator setting. Snapchat documents it on friends’ avatars but doesn’t list every place in the app where it appears. No dot does not mean they’re offline.
Check what happened in your conversation
Start with the conversation’s status icons to see which interactions have happened.
- 1.Open the Chat screen in Snapchat.
- 2.Find your conversation with the person.
- 3.Inspect the status icons for an opened or viewed Snap or Chat, a screenshot, or a replay. These record completed actions; an opened message does not mean the person is still online.
- 4.Check for a received Snap or unread Chat, which shows an incoming interaction. A sent or pending icon does not establish that the recipient is active.
- 5.For group activity, open your Group Chat from the Chat screen. Members’ names appear beneath a group Snap after they open it.
- 6.Press and hold a Chat message to see who read or saved it. These records show interactions, not a list of members currently online.
When the activity dot is missing
A disabled Activity Indicator hides a person’s recent-activity dot.
Open your conversation from Chat to check its receipts for completed interactions. Changing your own settings cannot reveal someone else’s hidden activity.
To hide your own dot, open your Profile.
Tap ⚙️ to open Settings. Scroll down to the App & Privacy section and tap My Privacy & Data. Then scroll down to the Privacy Choices section and tap Activity Indicator.
Toggle Activity Indicator off. This controls only your own recent-activity indicator.
Use Snapchat+ for presence in your chat
If you subscribe to Snapchat+, you can check whether someone is viewing or peeking into your conversation. These indicators apply to that particular chat.
Open your Snapchat+ membership page.
Enable Friends in Chat.
Look at the conversation in the Chat feed. A friend’s Bitmoji holding a phone means they are present in your chat without typing.
For Peek a Peek, watch the Chat feed for an eyes emoji beside the conversation. It signals that someone is peeking into it.
Alternatively, open the shared conversation to watch for their Bitmoji at the side of the screen. This works in one-to-one and Group Chats, but you must be watching at the same time they peek.
Story views offer another activity clue
A Story view confirms that someone watched your Story. It does not tell you whether they’re still online.
Open My Account → My Story.
Swipe up to display the viewer list.
Look for the person’s name. Snapchat displays up to 200 viewer names; additional views increase the count without adding names.
For a public Story, open your public Story Snap.
Swipe up to Insights and Replies.
Check Viewers for the person’s name.
For viewing times with Snapchat+, open your Snapchat+ membership page.
Enable Story Timestamps.
Return to your Story.
Swipe up to its viewers. A timestamp beneath each viewer’s name gives you the time of that viewing action.
If the viewer list leaves you without an answer, open your conversation in Chat to check for an opened message or incoming reply. A missing viewer name alone does not establish inactivity.
Read Snap Map without mistaking location for activity
This check clears up the difference between a current location and current Snapchat use.
Open Snap Map.
Use Search at the top to find your friend.
Press and hold the friend to open their profile.
Inspect the location information they share with you.
Read now beside the battery percentage as a sign that the location information is current. Background location sharing allows updates after the app closes, so this label does not establish active Snapchat use.
Treat an Actionmoji as contextual information. Its appearance reflects signals such as movement, area, and time of day, or a pose the user selected. It does not confirm active app use.
On a computer, try Bitmoji Plaza
Sign in at web.snapchat.com.
Enable Bitmoji Plaza in web settings. Your friends must also opt in to participate.
Look for participating friends’ Bitmojis in the plaza. They join when those friends sign into Snapchat for Web and leave when they go offline. This feature is exclusive to the web version and does not show every friend using Snapchat on a phone.
For a direct check, select a friend’s name in the Chat feed.
Send them a message. A reply establishes participation at that moment.
Tip: Match each clue to what it shows, whether that’s web presence, a Story view, or activity in your conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone read my message without it showing as opened?
Yes. Reading a Chat Preview notification does not mark the message as opened, so an unopened message cannot prove that someone is inactive.
Does a changing Snapscore mean someone is online?
No. A score change is an indirect activity clue. With Snapchat+, open the friend’s Friendship Profile, then tap their Snapscore to see its change since your previous check. Snapchat does not promise instant score updates or describe the score as an online indicator.
Can Snapchat alert me whenever a friend comes online?
Snapchat’s help documentation doesn’t describe a notification that fires whenever a friend comes online. Its notifications report specific events, including typing, incoming Snaps or Chats, and friends posting Stories.
Does the Story Rewatch Indicator reveal who rewatched my Story?
No. It counts friends who rewatched but does not identify them, so it cannot establish that a particular person was active.
