The fastest fix is the simplest one. Pull the power cable from the back of the Nest Mini and wait a full 15 seconds (don't rush this). Plug it back in. The device takes about 45 seconds to boot. Once the four white LEDs settle, try saying "Hey Google" again. This clears most temporary hangs.
If that didn't work, here's what's likely happening and how to work through the rest.
Check the Mic Mute Switch First
Look at the Nest Mini from the back. On the left side there's a physical switch with a microphone icon. If it's slid toward the red dot, the mic is muted and the status lights glow orange. Slide it back the other way. The orange lights turn off and the Nest Mini starts listening again.
The mic mute switch is mechanical and can get stuck after years of use. If it feels stiff, try sliding it back and forth a few times to free it up. If it doesn't click into place, that's a known hardware issue with older units.
Soft Restart Cleanly
Disconnect the power cord from the Nest Mini itself, not from the wall outlet. Wait a full 30 seconds, that allows the internal capacitors to discharge for a clean boot. Reconnect. The device will take up to a minute to power on and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Test the wake word.
Check the Google Home App for Status
Open the Google Home app on your phone. Tap the Nest Mini device card. If it shows "Offline," the device lost its Wi-Fi connection. If it shows "Online" but the Nest Mini still doesn't respond, the voice service is hung. Either way, the next few steps will fix it.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi
In the Google Home app, tap your Nest Mini, then tap the gear icon in the top right. Go to Device information > Wi‑Fi > Forget network. Then set it up again through the app's device pairing flow. Stick with your 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network, the Nest Mini doesn't support 6 GHz, so that's one less variable.
If your router uses separate SSIDs for each band, pick the 5 GHz one first for better performance. The Nest Mini will stay on that band unless the router forces a roam.
Force a Firmware Update
Google pushes Nest Mini firmware updates automatically when the device is idle. Leave the Nest Mini plugged in and unused for 30 minutes. During that time it checks for pending updates and downloads them. After 30 minutes, unplug it, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. The newly downloaded firmware installs during the boot sequence.
If the device becomes unresponsive again shortly after booting, you may have hit a firmware bug. The factory reset below will force a clean install of the latest firmware.
Disable a Misbehaving Routine or Connected Service
If the Nest Mini responds to some commands but not others, a routine or a linked service could be hanging. In the Google Home app, tap your Nest Mini, then tap Routines (under Settings). Temporarily disable any routine that's been added or modified recently. Test the wake word again.
Also check Linked services under the device settings. If a music or smart home service (like Spotify, YouTube Music, or Philips Hue) has a failed connection, it can block further commands. Unlink and relink that service in the Google Home app.
Check Gemini for Home Rollout Status
As of April 2026, Google is rolling out Gemini for Home in 16+ countries. Some Nest Mini units may still default to legacy Assistant. If you enrolled in the early access program but the device isn't using Gemini, open the Google Home app, tap your profile icon, then Settings > Google Assistant > Gemini for Home. If the Nest Mini shows "Not yet enabled," toggle it off and on again. This sometimes nudges the rollout to complete.
If Gemini is partially enabled but the device stops responding, try switching back to legacy Assistant temporarily. Go to the same menu and toggle Gemini off. Test for a day. You can re‑enable it later once the rollout stabilizes.
Factory Reset the Google Nest Mini
If software fixes haven't helped, do a full reset. Slide the mic mute switch to the off position (the lights turn orange). Then press and hold the center top of the device for about 15 seconds. You'll hear a reset tone. The device returns to factory state and you need to set it up again through the Google Home app. This wipes all routines, linked services, and Voice Match profiles.
Factory reset is the nuclear option but it clears nearly every software issue. After set‑up, test the wake word before re‑enabling any routines.
Reboot Your Wi‑Fi Router
If other smart devices in your home are also unresponsive, the router is probably the culprit. Unplug it for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to fully boot (about three minutes). The Nest Mini should reconnect automatically. If it doesn't, follow the Wi‑Fi reconnect steps above.
If the Mic Still Doesn't Work
If the Nest Mini boots cleanly, connects to Wi‑Fi, and shows online in the Google Home app, but doesn't respond to "Hey Google" from close range (a foot or two away), the microphone array may be physically failing. Try testing with the Google Home app's built‑in audio test: go to the device settings and say "Test microphone." If the levels are flat, the mic is likely dead. The Nest Mini is not user‑serviceable; you'll need a replacement unit.
