Resetting a Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) looks different from most smart speakers because there’s no reset button, the entire process runs through the physical mic mute switch. The quickest method: slide the mic switch to the off position (you’ll see orange lights), then press and hold the center of the top of the device for about 15 seconds until you hear a tone. That’s it. The Nest Mini reboots into setup mode ready to be paired again.
What Actually Gets Erased
A factory reset wipes everything stored locally, paired Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi credentials, and any locally cached preferences. Your Google account, Voice Match profiles (up to six people), routines, and music service settings all live in the cloud and reattach automatically when you re-pair the Nest Mini.
The one thing that doesn’t survive the reset: any custom adjustments you’ve made through the Google Home app, like equalizer settings, night mode, and automation rules specific to this unit. Those are device‑specific and stored locally. Write down your preferred EQ settings if you want them back.
If you’re selling or giving away the Nest Mini, a factory reset clears your Wi-Fi password and home address info. That’s the right move for privacy.
The Standard Reset Method
Start with the Nest Mini powered on and lit up (white or colored lights are fine). Flip the mic mute switch on the back of the device to the off position. The lights turn solid orange, that’s your cue.
Now press and hold the center of the top surface. Keep holding for a full 15 seconds. You don’t need to count; wait for a chime or tone. After the tone, release your finger. The Nest Mini reboots, the lights flash, and within about a minute you see a white spinning light, that’s setup mode.
During the hold, don’t worry if the orange lights blink or change briefly. Keep your finger planted. The reset requires that the mic switch stay in the off position throughout the entire hold. If you accidentally slide the switch back on, the reset won’t trigger and you’ll have to start over.
Reset Through the Google Home App
If the Nest Mini is online and connected to your account, you can reset it without touching the hardware. Open the Google Home app, tap and hold your device’s card until the settings menu opens. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Remove device > Factory reset. Confirm and the device wipes itself remotely.
This method is handy if the Nest Mini is physically hard to reach (mounted on a wall, for example). It requires a working internet connection; if the device shows offline in the app, you’ll need to do the manual reset instead.
What If the Mic Switch Is Stuck or Unresponsive?
One of the known issues on older Nest Mini units is the mic mute switch becoming unresponsive after years of use. If sliding the switch doesn’t trigger orange lights, the device won’t accept a manual reset. Try sliding it back and forth a few times; sometimes that clears the gunk. If that doesn’t work, unplug the Nest Mini for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and try again immediately after boot.
If the switch still won’t engage, your only option is the software reset through the Google Home app, but that requires the device to be online. If it’s offline too, you may need to reach out to Google support for a replacement. The mechanism is mechanical and can wear out over several years.
Deregister vs. Factory Reset
There’s a difference between removing the Nest Mini from your Google account and doing a full reset. Deregistering only detaches the device from your account but leaves Wi-Fi credentials cached. Anyone who gets the Nest Mini can factory reset it and then connect it to their network without knowing your password, the reset clears it.
If you’re selling, gifting, or recycling the Nest Mini, always do both: deregister in the Home app first, then factory reset manually or from the app. That’s the cleanest way to hand it off.
One more thing: after the reset, the Nest Mini will ask to be set up again in the Home app. If you have Gemini for Home (rolling out in 16+ countries as of early 2026), you might see a prompt to enable it during setup. That’s optional, the legacy Assistant still works fine.
