You ask your Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) to play some music. It lights up, maybe gives you a silent nod, but no sound comes out. Or it says "Sorry, something went wrong" and stops.

This isn't usually a hardware problem. The Nest Mini is a tough little speaker, and most of the time the issue is in the software or your account settings inside the Google Home app. Let's walk through the fixes that actually work.

Try this first: say "Hey Google, stop." Then try asking for music again. If a ghost stream from a podcast, Spotify session, or YouTube video was still hanging in the background, this kills it cleanly. I've seen this fix solve the problem more than any other single step.

Check Your Default Music Service

If the Nest Mini connects but plays the wrong service or nothing at all, the default music service is probably set to something you don't use. The Google Home app defaults to YouTube Music unless you change it.

Open the Google Home app, tap your account icon in the top right, go to Settings > Digital wellbeing > Music & audio. Pick your preferred service (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music) and tap Set as default. Make sure the account is linked right below that setting.

Stop Any Stale Cast Session

The Nest Mini runs on Chromecast technology. When you start a stream from your phone, the Nest Mini grabs it and holds onto it. Sometimes the audio drops but the connection doesn't release.

Open the Google Home app and find your Nest Mini on the home screen. If it shows "Casting audio" or any media player controls, tap the device and hit the Stop button (the red power icon in the top right). This forces the speaker to drop that background session. After you stop it, try your music request again.

Is the Microphone Muted?

Look at the back of the Nest Mini. The physical microphone switch is there, and if it's toggled to the orange position, the speaker can't hear your voice. You can still start music from the Google Home app manually, but voice commands won't work.

Flick the switch to the green position. If it feels stuck or loose, that's a known issue on older 2nd Gen units. Flicking it back and forth a few times usually breaks up whatever gunk is holding it up.

Sometimes the connection between Google and your streaming service just expires. This happens a lot after a password change or if your subscription lapsed and renewed. The Nest Mini still shows the service as linked, but the token is dead.

Go to Settings > Music & audio in the Google Home app. Tap the linked service and hit Unlink. Then tap Link a service and go through the login process fresh. Music usually starts working again immediately after re-linking.

Power Cycle the Nest Mini and Router

The Nest Mini works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router has Band Steering enabled, it can sometimes bounce the speaker between bands and drop the connection entirely.

Unplug the Nest Mini from the wall. Unplug your router too. Wait about 30 seconds, then plug the router back in and let it boot up fully. Plug the Nest Mini back in last. The device takes about a minute to boot and reconnect. Try your music after you hear the startup chime.

Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi

If the speaker is online but refuses to connect to your music service, the network handshake might be corrupted. Open the Google Home app, tap and hold your Nest Mini tile, tap Settings > Recognition & sharing > Forget this network.

Go back to the device settings and set up Wi-Fi again under Device information > Wi-Fi. Pick your network and enter the password. Stick with the 5 GHz band if your router lets you choose, it's usually faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz.

Check for Active Alarms or Routines

A timer or alarm that's going off silently in the background can block music playback. Say "Hey Google, stop all timers" or "Hey Google, cancel all alarms." You can also open the Google Home app and check the Routines section under Settings > Routines to make sure nothing weird is scheduled to override your music.

Reset the Nest Mini to Factory Settings

If none of the above fixes work, a full reset clears out any deep firmware or account glitches. It's fast and you won't lose your Google account, but you will need to set up the device again in the Google Home app.

Flip the microphone switch on the back to the OFF position (the lights turn orange). Press and hold the center area on top of the device for about 15 seconds. You'll hear a tone confirming the reset. The device reboots fresh. Set it up through the Google Home app, re-link your music services, and re-add Voice Match profiles. This usually clears up 99% of playback issues that nothing else could touch.
