watchOS 26 updates land on your Apple Watch Ultra 3 through the Watch app on your iPhone. There's no way to start one from the watch itself, so grab your iPhone and make sure the two are connected via Bluetooth before you dig in. Most updates are quick to download and install, but the full process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

Check Your Current watchOS Version

Before downloading anything, it helps to know what version you're running right now. On the watch, open Settings > General > About. The Software Version entry shows your current watchOS build.

You can also check from your iPhone. Open the Watch app, tap My Watch, then go to General > About. The same information lives there, just laid out differently. Knowing your current version helps you spot whether the update actually took hold after the install.

Charge the Ultra 3 and Connect to Wi-Fi

Apple requires the watch to be on its charger and have at least 50% battery before it will install an update. The Ultra 3 uses a magnetic charging puck and supports fast charging, 0 to 80% in about 60 minutes. If you're low, plug it in for a bit before you start.

Wi-Fi makes the download much faster than Bluetooth alone. Swipe up for Control Center on the watch, tap the Wi-Fi icon to make sure it's connected to a known network. The Ultra 3 supports 5G, but downloading a multi-gigabyte update over cellular can eat into your data cap, and reception drops in fringe areas will kill the transfer speed. If you're using 5G in a spotty area, the battery drains about 25 percent faster than LTE, so stick to Wi-Fi for the update.

Start the Update From Your iPhone

On your iPhone, open the Watch app and tap My Watch > General > Software Update. The phone checks Apple's servers and shows you the latest available watchOS version, complete with a brief description of what's included.

Tap Download and Install. Your iPhone handles the download first. Keep the phone and watch close together, Bluetooth range is about 30 feet. If you wander off, the transfer from phone to watch pauses and may stall the whole process.

Let the Watch Run the Install

Once the download lands on the Ultra 3, the install starts automatically. Don't tap around on the watch, don't take it off the charger, and try not to use your iPhone heavily during this window. The watch reboots into an update screen, installs the new version of watchOS, and reboots back to the watch face.

You might see the Apple logo and a progress bar for 10 to 20 minutes. This is the watch writing the OS and rebuilding app caches. After the final reboot, the watch is usable again.

Set Up Automatic Overnight Updates

You don't have to do this manually every time. In the Watch app on your iPhone, go to My Watch > General > Software Update and turn on Automatic Updates. Toggle both Download and Install to green.

With automatic updates on, your iPhone downloads watchOS updates overnight. As long as the Ultra 3 is on its charger, connected to Wi-Fi, and within range of the iPhone, it installs the update by morning. You wake up to the latest version without any extra steps on your end.

Fix a Stuck or Failed Update

If the download sits at "Preparing" for more than 10 minutes, force close the Watch app on your iPhone and start over. Sometimes the connection between the phone and Apple's servers just hangs.

If the install freezes and the progress bar hasn't budged in 30 minutes, you can force restart the Ultra 3. Hold the side button and the Digital Crown together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo shows up. The watch reboots and either finishes the update or rolls back to the previous version automatically.

A note for Ultra 3 owners with the new microLED display: rare color uniformity issues at low brightness have been reported in some early production batches. If the screen looks uneven after an update, check Settings > Display & Brightness and adjust the slider a bit. A forced restart usually clears transient software weirdness, but the display issue is hardware and might need a service appointment if it persists.

Confirm the Update and Test New Features

After the watch finishes updating, verify the new version stuck. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to My Watch > General > About, and check the Software Version. It should match the latest release.

watchOS 26 brings a few Ultra 3-specific features worth testing after an update. The hypertension alert system needs a 30-day calibration period, so don't worry if it doesn't start giving data immediately after updating. Try the new wrist-flick gestures for dismissing notifications or snoozing alarms, they work right out of the box after the update.

If you're heading outdoors, the Action button on the Ultra 3 can be mapped to Compass Backtrack for hiking. And remember that Satellite SOS works independently of your iPhone in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Keep a clear view of the sky if you need to use it, that feature needs a direct line to satellites and can fail in heavy tree cover or deep canyons.
