The TP-Link Deco BE85 is a powerful Wi-Fi 7 mesh system, but it's completely dependent on the TP-Link Deco app for setup. There's no hidden web-based wizard to fall back on. When the app can't find the router, everything grinds to a halt.
Before you do anything else, check that your phone has the right permissions. The Deco app uses Bluetooth Low Energy to discover the BE85 during initial pairing, and both iOS and Android require explicit permission for that scan to work.
Check the app permissions first
On iOS, open Settings, scroll down to Deco, and make sure Bluetooth, Location, and Local Network are all set to Allow. The Local Network toggle is the one people miss most often. Without it, the app can pair via Bluetooth but can't actually configure the router on your network, and the setup just hangs.
On Android, long-press the Deco app icon, tap App Info, then Permissions, and grant Location (While Using the App) and Nearby Devices. If either permission is denied, the app won't see the BE85 at all.
Turn off mobile data and VPNs
Your phone is probably on 5G or your home WiFi right now. That blocks the temporary setup network the BE85 creates. Turn off mobile data completely before opening the Deco app. If the app doesn't auto-prompt, go to your phone's WiFi settings and manually look for the Deco network.
VPNs cause the same problem. Deco needs to talk directly to the router on your local subnet, but a VPN reroutes that traffic and the app can't find anything. Disable any active VPN before starting setup. You can turn it back on after the BE85 is configured.
On iOS, also go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the network you're connecting to, and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address. MAC randomization can confuse the setup handshake.
Force-close and restart the Deco app
Sometimes the app just caches a bad state. On iOS, swipe up from the bottom and swipe the Deco app off the recents list. On Android, long-press the app icon, tap App Info, then Force Stop. Reopen the app and see if it finds the BE85 this time.
Is your firmware up to date?
The Deco app updates frequently, and the BE85 is a 2024 device that's still seeing active firmware improvements. Open the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android) and check for an update to the TP-Link Deco app. An older version might simply have a bug that prevents setup with the latest BE85 firmware.
For the router itself, the Deco app normally handles auto-updates by default. But if the app is working just enough to get in, you can manually check the firmware version in the app's settings or by browsing to tplinkdeco.net from a phone connected to the Deco network.
Power-cycle the Deco BE85
Unplug the router from the wall. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait for the LED to finish its startup routine. The light will flash yellow while it boots, then go solid yellow, and finally flash blue when it's ready for setup. If it goes solid blue, it's already configured and you might be overthinking things.
A clean power cycle clears any half-finished pairing state from a previous attempt. This is the single most common fix for a Deco app that can't find the router.
Factory reset the router and start fresh
If power-cycling didn't help, a factory reset usually will. The BE85 has a small reset button on the bottom. Press and hold it for about one second. The LED flashes yellow while it resets, then turns solid yellow as it boots, and finally flashes blue when it's back to factory defaults.
This wipes your network settings completely. You'll need to set up the whole mesh from scratch using the Deco app. If you have multiple BE85 nodes, reset only the primary one; the satellites can be re-paired during the new setup flow.
MLO is working, but it's client-dependent
If you're getting the BE85 configured and the app is showing limited options for Multi-Link Operation, that's by design. MLO requires Wi-Fi 7 capable client devices, which are still rare in 2025 and 2026. If your phone or laptop doesn't support Wi-Fi 7, the MLO settings in the app will be unavailable. That's not a bug, just a hardware limitation.
The BE85 defaults to WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode, so older devices connect without any fuss. If you're having trouble connecting a specific device after setup, check that it supports the mixed security mode.
Reinstall the TP-Link Deco app
If nothing above worked, delete the Deco app and install a fresh copy from the App Store or Play Store. This clears local database corruption that can block router discovery. Your TP-Link account and any saved network settings sync back from the cloud once you log in again.
After reinstalling, sign into your TP-Link account and walk through the new device flow. The app should find the BE85 on the first scan.
