When your TCL TV has a picture but no sound, it's usually a simple setting or a connection hiccup. The first thing I'd check is whether the audio is being sent to the wrong place, which is incredibly common on these smart TVs.
Check Your Audio Output
Press the settings button on your remote and navigate to Settings > Audio. Look for the audio output option. If you're using the TV's built-in speakers, make sure it's set to TV Speakers. If you have a soundbar connected via the HDMI ARC port, it should be set to HDMI ARC or External Speakers. Selecting the wrong one here is the most frequent culprit for total silence.
Perform a Power Cycle
Unplug the power cord from the back of your TCL TV. Wait for a full 60 seconds before plugging it back in. This gives the internal capacitors time to drain completely, which resets the audio processor and can clear up temporary software glitches that cause sound to drop out.
Inspect Your HDMI Connections
If the sound is missing from a game console, streaming stick, or Blu-ray player, the HDMI cable might be the issue. Unplug the HDMI cable from both the TV and the device, then firmly reconnect it. Try using a different HDMI port on your TCL TV, as sometimes a single port can fail. If you have a spare cable, swap it in to test.
Configure HDMI ARC Correctly
For soundbars, you must use the specific HDMI port on your TCL TV that supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). It's almost always HDMI 1 and will be labeled in the port area or your manual. In your TV's settings, under System or Channels & Inputs, ensure HDMI-CEC control is turned on. This feature, sometimes called Simplink or just CEC, allows the devices to talk to each other properly.
Change the Digital Audio Format
Head back to Settings > Audio and find the digital audio out or S/PDIF format setting. If it's set to Auto or Bitstream, try changing it to PCM. PCM is a simpler, universal format that every sound system can understand, whereas some soundbars and receivers can't decode the more advanced formats sent by Auto, resulting in no sound.
Test a Single Streaming App
If you only have no sound in Netflix or Disney+, the problem is isolated to that app. Try playing a different title within the app, as some content has complex audio tracks. Force close the app from the app settings menu and reopen it. As a last resort for that app, uninstall and reinstall it from the Google TV store.
Isolate the TV Speakers
Disconnect any soundbars or external speakers completely. Go into your audio settings and force the output back to TV Speakers. Play some content. If you get sound now, you've confirmed the TV's hardware is fine and the issue lies in the connection or settings for your external audio system.
Update Your TV's Software
Go to Settings > System > About > System update and check for updates. TCL and Google regularly push updates for Google TV that fix bugs, including audio dropouts and HDMI ARC problems. I've seen updates specifically resolve sound issues that appeared out of nowhere.
Check for a Muted Remote
This seems basic, but with multiple remotes in the mix, it's easy to get confused. Press the volume up button on your TCL remote. Also, check if the mute button was accidentally pressed. If you use a soundbar remote or a universal remote, make sure it's controlling the correct device's volume and isn't muted on its end.
Reset Your Audio Settings
If you've tried everything and the sound is still missing, reset just the audio configurations. In Settings > Audio, look for an option labeled Reset audio settings or Reset sound to default. This will wipe any custom equalizer settings or output modes you've set, reverting them to factory defaults, which often clears up a stubborn software conflict.
