Seeing your Sony Xperia 1 VI's beautiful 4K OLED screen flicker or flash is incredibly distracting. It can make everything from watching videos to just reading a text feel broken. This is usually a software hiccup that you can fix yourself, though it can sometimes point to a deeper hardware issue. Let's get it sorted.

Force Restart Your Phone

This is the first thing I'd try. A force restart clears out temporary glitches in the system memory that can affect the display driver. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button together for about ten seconds. You'll feel the phone vibrate and see the Sony logo as it reboots. If the flickering was a momentary bug, this often clears it right up.

Disable Adaptive Brightness

Your Xperia uses a light sensor to adjust screen brightness automatically. If that sensor gets confused or there's a software conflict, it can cause the screen to flicker as it tries to constantly readjust. Swipe down and tap the settings gear, then go to Display. Look for Adaptive brightness and turn the switch off. Set your brightness manually with the slider and see if the flickering stops.

Check for a Rogue App

A recently installed or updated app with a buggy display overlay or animation can cause problems. Try using the phone in Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all third-party apps. Press and hold the power button, then on the power off menu, tap and hold Restart until you see a prompt to reboot into Safe Mode. If the flickering is gone in Safe Mode, an app is the culprit. You'll need to uninstall apps one by one, starting with the most recent, to find the bad one.

Update Your Software

Sony does release software updates that include display stability improvements and bug fixes. It's worth checking, even if your phone says it's up to date. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap Check for update. Download and install any available update. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has a good charge, preferably over 50%, before starting.

Adjust or Turn Off Motion Smoothing

The Xperia 1 VI has a high refresh rate display. Sometimes, the software that handles motion smoothing for videos or games can act up. Go to Settings > Display and look for settings related to refresh rate or motion enhancement. Try switching from 120Hz to 60Hz, or turn off any video motion flow features. See if this changes or eliminates the flickering, especially if it happens mainly in certain apps.

Reset App Preferences or All Settings

This is a deeper fix that doesn't erase your personal data. It resets all your system settings back to default, which can clear a corrupted display configuration. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. You can try Reset app preferences first, which resets app permissions and notifications. If that doesn't work, go back and choose Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. As a last resort before a full factory reset, choose Reset all settings. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and reconfigure things like ringtones afterward.

Inspect for Physical Damage

If the flickering started after you dropped the phone or it got wet, you might be looking at a hardware issue. Look closely at the screen for any new cracks, even hairline ones, or spots where the display looks discolored or has pressure marks. A loose internal display connector can also cause flickering. Unfortunately, physical damage means a repair is needed. Given the Xperia's sophisticated display, I'd recommend seeking out an authorized Sony service center.

Perform a Factory Reset

If all else fails, a factory reset is the definitive test to see if it's a software or hardware problem. This will erase everything on your phone, so you must back up your photos, messages, and app data first. Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). Follow the prompts. After the reset, set up the phone as new without restoring your backup immediately. If the flickering is gone on a fresh system, the issue was in your previous software setup. If it persists, it's almost certainly a hardware fault with the display itself.
