You bought the WF-1000XM6 for the industry-leading noise cancellation and that 8-hour battery with ANC. If yours is conking out after four or five hours, something is burning through charge way too fast. The biggest culprit on Android is the Bluetooth codec. Sony defaults to LDAC, which uses roughly 30% more power than AAC. That's a solid two to three hours of runtime you can get back with one switch in the Sound Connect app.
If you're on an iPhone, LDAC isn't available, so the drain is coming from somewhere else. Either way, the fixes below cover the usual suspects, and most of them take under a minute.
Switch from LDAC to AAC in Sound Connect
Open the Sony Sound Connect app and tap your WF-1000XM6. Head to Sound > Bluetooth Connection Quality and change it from Priority on Sound Quality to Priority on Stable Connection. That forces AAC mode. LDAC at 990 kbps is overkill for Spotify and YouTube, and the battery hit isn't worth it unless you're listening to lossless files on Tidal or Apple Music.
On Android 14, the Sound Connect app has been known to crash after changing settings. If the app freezes or closes, reopen it and check that the change actually took. The earbuds remember the last setting, so once it sticks, you're good.
Turn Off DSEE Extreme
DSEE Extreme is Sony's real-time upscaling chip that tries to restore lost detail from compressed audio. It sounds nice in theory, but it keeps the internal processor running full-time while music plays, which eats battery. In Sound Connect, go to Sound > DSEE Extreme and toggle it off. Most people can't tell the difference on standard streaming, and you'll get noticeably more playback time.
While you're in the Sound menu, make sure your custom equalizer isn't set to a bass-heavy or treble-boost preset. Any non-flat EQ keeps the DSP chip active. Set EQ to Off instead of a custom curve, and you'll squeeze out another ten or fifteen minutes per charge.
Disable Adaptive Sound Control
Adaptive Sound Control learns your locations and automatically switches between ANC, ambient sound, and off based on what you're doing. It's smart, but it keeps the motion and location sensors awake, which drains the buds faster than a fixed mode. In Sound Connect, tap Sound > Adaptive Sound Control and turn it off. Then pick a single mode, full ANC for the office or ambient for walking, and leave it there.
If you've ever noticed the earbuds randomly switching modes when you're sitting still, that's the sensor being over-sensitive. Killing Adaptive Sound Control stops that, too.
Turn Off Speak-to-Chat and Voice Assistant
Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses music when you start talking. It uses the microphones constantly to listen for your voice, which pulls extra power even when you're not speaking. In Sound Connect, go to Sound > Speak-to-Chat and switch it off if you don't use it regularly.
Similarly, if you've set up Google Assistant or Alexa for hands-free wake-word activation, the mics stay hot. Head to System > Voice Assistant and set it to Off. You can still trigger the assistant with a tap on the earbud, it just won't be listening constantly.
Update the Firmware
Sony has pushed several firmware updates for the WF-1000XM6 since launch, and a few specifically fixed battery drain bugs. Open Sound Connect, tap your earbuds, then go to System > Software Update. If an update is available, install it. Both buds need to be in the case with at least 50% charge, and the process takes about 15 minutes. Don't use your phone for any Bluetooth-heavy tasks during the update, or it may fail and you'll have to restart.
If the app crashes on Android 14 during the update, try clearing the app cache first (Settings > Apps > Sound Connect > Storage > Clear cache). That usually smooths out the process.
Clean the Charging Contacts
Sometimes the earbuds don't charge fully because the contacts are dirty. Pull both buds out and look at the gold pins on the bottom of each stem, then check the matching contacts inside the case wells. Wipe them all with a dry microfiber cloth or a soft toothbrush. If there's sticky residue, use a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) on a cotton swab, then let everything dry for a couple of minutes.
Put the buds back in and close the lid for five minutes. Then open Sound Connect and check the left and right battery levels. They should match within a few percent. If one is lagging, the contacts weren't making good connection.
Limit Multipoint to One Device
Multipoint lets the WF-1000XM6 stay paired to two devices at the same time, like your phone and laptop. That's convenient, but it keeps the Bluetooth radio doing a constant background handshake even when only one device is active. In Sound Connect, go to System > Connect 2 Devices Simultaneously and turn it off. You'll get a modest but consistent boost in battery life, and switching between devices is still quick when you manually reconnect.
If you've noticed the second device dropping out anyway, that's a known issue with multipoint on these buds. Turning it off solves both problems.
Factory Reset the Earbuds
If you've tried everything and the battery still drains abnormally fast, a factory reset can clear out any glitched settings. Make sure both buds are in the case with the lid open. Press and hold the button on the back of the case for about 20 seconds. The indicator light will flash orange for roughly five seconds and then turn off. That's a full reset.
After the reset, you'll need to re-pair the earbuds with your phone. Your sound profiles and EQ settings will be gone, but they'll sync back from your Sony account if you have cloud backup enabled. Many users report battery life returns to normal after a reset, especially if the issue started after a failed firmware update.
Check the Case Battery
Don't forget that the case itself holds 16 hours of extra charge. If the case battery is low, the buds might not get a full charge even if they're sitting in the wells. Plug the case into a USB-C charger or place it on a Qi pad. Sony says a standard 5W charger is sufficient, and even a three-minute charge gives you about 60 minutes of playback thanks to the fast-charge feature.
Once the case is topped up, leave the buds in for a full 30 minutes before checking battery levels again. If they still drain quickly, the issue is likely software, not the case.
