When apps on your Sony Bravia TV get stuck on the loading screen, crash back to the home screen, or just won't open, your streaming night is ruined. This can happen with Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, or any app on the Google TV platform. The good news is, a few simple steps can usually get things running again.
Force Close the App
First, try closing the app completely. On your Bravia remote, press the Home button to exit the frozen app. Then, navigate back to the app and try launching it again. For a more thorough close, you can press and hold the Home button to bring up the recent apps menu, select the problematic app, and swipe it away to force stop it. This clears the app from the TV's temporary memory.
Power Cycle Your Bravia TV
If force closing doesn't work, a full power cycle is your next best move. Unplug the power cord from the back of your TV or from the wall outlet. Wait for a full 60 seconds before plugging it back in. This gives the TV's internal components time to fully reset and clears out any temporary software glitches affecting all apps.
I find this fixes about 80% of random app loading problems. It's especially helpful if the Google TV interface itself feels sluggish, which can happen on some models.
Check Your Network Connection
Your apps need a stable internet connection. From the home screen, go to Settings > Network & Internet. You can run a network test here to check your speed and connection status.
If you're using Wi-Fi, try moving your router closer or using a 5GHz band if available. For the most reliable streaming, I'd recommend a wired Ethernet connection if your TV and router placement allow for it.
Clear the App's Cache and Data
Corrupted temporary files can prevent an app from launching. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find the app that's giving you trouble and select it.
Choose Clear cache first. If the app still won't load, you can try Clear data. Be warned, clearing data will log you out and reset the app to its default state, so you'll need to sign back in.
Update the Problem App
Head to the Google Play Store on your TV. Search for the app that's failing. If an update is available, you'll see an "Update" button. Outdated apps can have bugs or lose compatibility with the TV's software over time.
You can also set apps to update automatically. In the Play Store, go to your profile icon and check the settings to enable auto-updates.
Update Your TV's System Software
Sony releases firmware updates that fix bugs and improve app performance. To check, go to Settings > System > About > Software update. Select "System software update" and then "Check for update."
It's a good idea to check the Sony support website for your specific model, as some major updates are rolled out in phases and might not appear on the TV immediately.
Reinstall the App
Uninstalling and reinstalling gives you a completely fresh copy of the app. From the Settings > Apps menu, select the app and choose "Uninstall." Then, go back to the Google Play Store and download it again.
This process removes all the app's files and data from your TV, which can eliminate deep-seated corruption that clearing cache alone might not fix.
See if the Streaming Service is Down
Before you spend more time troubleshooting your TV, check if the problem is on the other end. Services like Netflix or Disney+ can have server outages.
Quickly check Downdetector.com on your phone or look at the service's official X (Twitter) account for any announcements about widespread issues. If their servers are down, you just have to wait.
Free Up Storage Space on the TV
Bravia TVs have limited internal storage. If it's nearly full, apps can struggle to function or update. Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Storage to see how much space is free.
You can free up space by uninstalling apps you no longer use. Also, some apps allow you to clear their downloaded content, like offline videos, from within their own settings menus.
Perform a Factory Reset
If every single app is broken and nothing else has worked, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase all your settings, logged-in accounts, and installed apps, returning the TV to its out-of-the-box state.
You can find this option at Settings > System > About > Reset. Only use this if the problem is system-wide. You'll have to set up your Wi-Fi, accounts, and preferences all over again afterward.
