If Your Car Has Any of These 8 Systems, Your Privacy May Already Be at Risk

What's In This List

What You Need to Know

This slideshow highlights 8 key points including: Rental Car Infotainment Systems; Ford Connected Vehicle Systems; Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis NVIDIA DRIVE Systems....

1

Rental Car Infotainment Systems

Rental Car Infotainment Systems

Rental car infotainment systems pose significant privacy risks when drivers sync their smartphones. According to CNBC reporting, 57% of people sync their smartphones to rental vehicles, and less than half remember to delete their profiles and data before returning the car. This seemingly innocuous act exposes sensitive information including contact lists, voice and text messages, passwords, garage codes, GPS data, and medical and financial information.

The personal data left behind can be accessed by subsequent renters or malicious actors. Security expert Clyde Williamson warns that this information "might be more than enough to sell to somebody who is going to call and try to scam your grandma out of money by [saying] you were in an accident or you were arrested."

Experts recommend avoiding syncing phones to rental cars unless absolutely necessary. If you do sync, unpair your device, clear call/text logs and destinations, and perform a factory reset of the infotainment system before returning the vehicle.

Ford Connected Vehicle Systems

Ford Connected Vehicle Systems

Ford's connected vehicle systems are part of the broader trend toward data collection in modern vehicles. The research indicates that cars are coming under greater scrutiny for data privacy issues as they become closer to computers on wheels, with more than 95% of passenger cars sold likely to have embedded connectivity by 2030.

These systems collect location and other personal data; Ford's privacy notice says it may "sell" or share certain personal data (including geolocation) for targeted advertising under state privacy laws, with opt-out rights. The integration of connectivity features means that vehicles are essentially mobile data collection devices.

3

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis NVIDIA DRIVE Systems

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis NVIDIA DRIVE Systems

Hyundai Motor Group announced it would standardize NVIDIA DRIVE IVI across all new Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models starting in 2022. These systems feature AI-enhanced connected car services and collect vast amounts of data from vehicle sensors and external data centers.

The new connected car operating system (ccOS) brings together large amounts of data generated by the vehicle and its network of sensors, raising questions about data privacy and potential misuse of personal information.

Hyundai Motor Group has stated commitment to delivering value and safety, but users should monitor privacy policies and data sharing agreements as these systems evolve.

4

AI-Powered Personalization Systems

AI-Powered Personalization Systems

Modern infotainment systems increasingly use AI to personalize experiences. These algorithms continuously enhance the driving experience by analyzing data such as frequently visited locations and climate settings. The systems adapt based on user habits and preferences.

While personalization enhances user experience, it requires extensive data collection about personal preferences, travel patterns, and behaviors that could be valuable to data brokers or malicious actors.

Users should understand what personalization features they're enabling and regularly review privacy settings to limit data collection to essential functions only.

Real-Time Traffic and Navigation Systems

Real-Time Traffic and Navigation Systems

AI-powered navigation systems like Waze and Google Maps use real-time traffic data to provide efficient routes. These systems require continuous location tracking and data sharing to function effectively.

Constant location tracking can create detailed movement profiles revealing routines, workplaces, and frequently visited places. Waze and other navigation providers collect location data to operate their services and for things like analytics or advertising, subject to their privacy policies.

Users should review location sharing settings and consider using navigation systems that offer enhanced privacy protections or operate in offline modes when possible.

6

Voice Recognition and Command Systems

Voice Recognition and Command Systems

Voice recognition technology has seen significant advancements with AI integration into car infotainment systems. These systems enable hands-free interaction but require processing of voice commands and conversations.

Voice inputs may be processed in the cloud to improve recognition and features, which can include storing transcripts or audio snippets depending on the provider and settings. Recent rollouts from automakers highlight expanded AI assistants that rely on external platforms, raising additional privacy and data-handling questions for always-listening features.

Users should understand voice data collection policies, disable always-listening features when not needed, and regularly review stored voice data that can be deleted from manufacturer accounts.

7

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication Systems

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication Systems

Future AI-powered infotainment systems are integral to vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, enabling data exchange between vehicles, infrastructure, and other devices. These systems provide real-time information about traffic, weather, and road conditions.

V2X systems create extensive data networks that could be vulnerable to cyberattacks or unauthorized access. The interconnected nature means that a security breach in one system could affect multiple vehicles and infrastructure components.

8

Cloud-Connected Infotainment Platforms

Cloud-Connected Infotainment Platforms

The global automotive infotainment market was valued at about $33.85 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach roughly $58.18 billion by 2032, with cloud connectivity becoming standard. These systems enable remote updates, data synchronization, and enhanced features through cloud services.

Cloud connectivity means that personal data and vehicle information are transmitted and stored on external servers, potentially making them accessible to the service providers and their partners for commercial purposes.
