When your Samsung Neo QLED TV remote stops responding, it can feel like you've lost control of your entire entertainment center. The good news is, it's almost always a simple fix you can handle yourself.

Replace the Remote Batteries

This is the first thing to check, even if the batteries aren't that old. Pop open the battery compartment on the back of your Samsung remote and swap in a fresh pair of AAA batteries. Make sure they're inserted with the correct polarity, as shown in the compartment. If you're using the rechargeable Solar Cell Remote, try charging it via its USB-C port or placing it under a bright light for a while.

Power Cycle Your Samsung TV

Unplug your Neo QLED TV from the wall outlet and wait a full 60 seconds. This gives the TV's internal systems, including the Bluetooth and IR receivers, a complete reset. Plug it back in, wait for it to boot up completely, and then try the remote again. I've found this resolves a lot of quirky connection issues.

Re-Pair the Bluetooth Remote

Your Samsung smart remote uses Bluetooth, not just infrared. If it's become unpaired, you'll need to reconnect it. On your TV, use the physical power button to navigate to Settings > General & Privacy > Power and Energy Saving > Remote Control Settings. From there, select Bluetooth Remote Setup and follow the on-screen instructions to pair your remote again.

Check for Line-of-Sight Issues

While the remote primarily uses Bluetooth, it also has an IR blaster for controlling soundbars and other devices. Make sure nothing is physically blocking the IR sensor on the lower bezel of your TV. A soundbar placed directly in front of it is a common culprit. For general use, just point the remote in the general direction of the TV.

Use the Samsung SmartThings App

As a great temporary workaround, download the Samsung SmartThings app on your smartphone. Once you add your TV to the app, it functions as a full virtual remote, giving you control over power, volume, navigation, and even app launching while you sort out the physical remote.

Clean the Remote and TV Sensor

Dust and grime can accumulate over the IR sensor on both the remote and the TV. Gently wipe the front of the remote and the sensor area on the TV with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Let everything dry completely before testing the remote again.

Test the Remote with a Phone Camera

To see if the remote's infrared function is working at all, use your smartphone's camera. Open the camera app, point the end of the remote at the lens, and press any button. You should see a faint white or purple light flashing through your phone's screen. If you don't see any light, the remote's IR emitter might be faulty.

Use the TV's Physical Control Button

All Samsung Neo QLED TVs have a physical control button, usually a small joystick, located on the back of the set. You can use this to power the TV on, navigate menus, adjust volume, and change inputs. It's the best way to get into the TV's settings if your remote is completely dead.

Run a Self Diagnosis

Your TV has a built-in diagnostic tool that can check the remote connection. Using the physical control button on the TV, go to Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis. Select Sound Test or Smart Hub Connection Test, as these will prompt you to press remote buttons to proceed, helping identify if the TV is receiving the signal.

Reset the Remote Itself

For a more thorough reset, remove the batteries from the remote. Press and hold the power button on the remote for about 30 seconds to drain any residual charge. Then, reinsert the fresh batteries. This can clear out any temporary glitches in the remote's memory.

If you've been using Multi View mode heavily, try turning it off via the TV's settings using the physical button. Some performance issues with the system can occasionally affect peripheral connectivity, including the remote. For most people, one of these steps will get the clicker back in action.
