Resetting a Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro (the one formerly called Video Doorbell Pro 2) is a straightforward process, but the hardwired-only design throws a couple of curveballs compared to battery-powered models. There's no battery to pull, no quick-release tab, so the reset button under the faceplate is your main tool. Hold it for 20 seconds, let the light flash a few times, and the doorbell wipes itself clean.
The quickest method: pop off the faceplate, find the small setup button on the right side of the device, press and hold it for 20 full seconds. The front light flashes a few times to confirm the reset. Release the button, and the doorbell reboots into setup mode, ready to pair again through the Ring app. The whole thing takes about a minute from button press to pairing mode.
What a Factory Reset Actually Clears
A full reset on the Wired Video Doorbell Pro wipes everything stored locally on the device. That includes saved Wi-Fi credentials, the current pairing with your Ring account, any customized motion zones, video settings, and the Bird-Eye View 3D radar map data that's cached on the doorbell itself.
What stays on Ring's cloud servers: your Ring account, your Ring Protect subscription (if you have one), any shared users you've invited, and the full video history from past events. Those are tied to your account, not to the device. Once you re-pair the doorbell to the same account, your subscription and video history reappear automatically. Pre-Roll snapshots (the 4 seconds before motion events) are also cloud-stored, so those come back too.
Bird-Eye View maps will need recalibration after a reset. The doorbell re-learns the layout the next few times someone walks up to it, but you can speed that up by walking a slow path in front of the doorbell after setup.
The Full Reset and Re-pair Process
Start by removing the faceplate. The Wired Video Doorbell Pro uses Torx security screws on the bottom; you'll need the included screwdriver or a T6 Torx bit. Once the faceplate is off, the setup button sits on the right side of the device, recessed slightly. Press it and hold for 20 seconds. You'll see the front light flash a few times to confirm. Release the button and wait about 30 seconds for the doorbell to finish rebooting.
Open the Ring app on your phone. If you're starting fresh, tap Set Up a Device. If you already have other Ring devices, tap the + icon in the top right and choose Doorbell. The app asks you to scan the QR code on the device (sticker on the back or on the box). If the sticker is gone, you can enter the MAC address manually, but the QR code is much faster.
Select your Wi-Fi network. The Wired Video Doorbell Pro supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. For initial pairing, 2.4 GHz tends to be more reliable since it reaches farther from the router. Once connected, the doorbell downloads any available firmware updates (this can take a few minutes) and then you'll be asked to set up motion zones and Bird-Eye View. You can skip motion zone setup and adjust later if you're in a hurry.
When the Reset Button Ignores You
Sometimes the doorbell doesn't respond to the 20-second hold, especially if it's mid-update or stuck in a bad software state. Because this model is hardwired, you can't just unplug a battery. The easiest way to force a full power cycle is to flip the breaker that supplies the transformer (usually labeled "doorbell" or "bell" in your panel) off for 30 seconds, then back on. If you can't find the breaker, you can also disconnect the doorbell's wiring from the transformer screws, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect.
After the power cycle, the doorbell boots fresh. Try the 20-second button hold again as soon as the light turns on (within the first 10 seconds of boot). That timing often works better when the device is coming back from a cold start.
If the doorbell still won't reset, check the faceplate alignment. The setup button is tiny and requires the faceplate to be removed completely, if the faceplate is only partially off, the button might be blocked.
Reset Through the Ring App (If the Doorbell Is Online)
If the doorbell is still connected to your account and responding to the live view (even slowly), you can factory reset it remotely through the Ring app. Open the app, tap the doorbell device, then tap the gear icon in the top right. Scroll down and tap Device Settings > General Settings > Factory Reset. Confirm, and the doorbell wipes itself and reboots into setup mode. This method won't work if the doorbell is offline or unresponsive.
Re-pairing After Reset: Known Quirks
The Wired Video Doorbell Pro (still called Video Doorbell Pro 2 in some older Ring app versions) has a known issue with slow live view when connected to a weak 5 GHz signal. If you're seeing 5-15 second delays after re-pairing, switch the doorbell to 2.4 GHz during setup. You can change the band later by going into the device's Wi-Fi settings in the Ring app, but it's easier to pick it upfront.
Bird-Eye View 3D radar maps sometimes lose calibration after a reset. If the overhead walkway appears stretched or misaligned, walk to the door and then walk away in a straight line a few times. The map recalibrates itself after about three to five detections.
Deregistering Without Resetting
If you're selling or gifting the doorbell, don't just reset it. You need to both factory reset and remove it from your Ring account. Open the Ring app, tap the doorbell, go to Device Settings > General Settings > Remove This Device. This deletes the doorbell from your account. Then perform the 20-second button hold to wipe the local data.
If you only deregister without the factory reset, the doorbell still has your Wi-Fi password stored. The next owner would need to perform a reset anyway to pair it to their account, but your credentials remain accessible during that brief window. Doing both steps ensures nothing personal is left behind.
