You walk up to your Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro and tap the live view in the Ring app, only to watch it spin. Maybe you get a "Failed to connect" message, or the feed loads after a painful 15-second delay. The doorbell itself looks fine, the light ring is working, the button chimes inside. Most of the time the problem is on the app side or the network side, not the doorbell hardware.

Start with the quickest possible fix. Force-quit the Ring app and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and flick the Ring app card up. On Android, tap the recent apps button and swipe Ring away. Then reopen and give it a few seconds to fully reload. A surprising number of app-side hangs resolve at this step alone.

Is Ring's Service Down?

Before you change anything on your phone or doorbell, check whether Ring's cloud services are having an issue. Open a browser and go to Ring's status page, if there's an active incident, no amount of app tweaking will help. You just need to wait for Ring to restore things. They usually post updates within minutes of any major outage.

Sign Out and Back In

If the app is running but still won't connect, your account session might have expired silently. Open the Ring app, tap the three lines in the top-left corner for the menu, then tap Account and scroll down to Sign Out. Confirm, and the app returns to the login screen. Sign back in with your email and password. This clears any stale authentication tokens that were blocking cloud commands.

Update the Ring App

Old app versions can lose compatibility with your doorbell, especially after firmware updates. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Ring, and tap Update if it's available. The Ring app pushes updates fairly often, and running a recent version avoids a lot of intermittent connection weirdness.

Check Local Network Permission on iOS

If you're on an iPhone, iOS requires explicit permission for the Ring app to discover devices on your home network. If you accidentally tapped Don't Allow when the prompt appeared, the app can't stream video directly. Open Settings > Ring on your iPhone and make sure Local Network is toggled ON. Restart the Ring app and try live view again.

Power Cycle the Doorbell

The Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro is hardwired (16-24 VAC) with no battery backup, so you can't just pull a battery. The easiest way to power cycle it is to flip the breaker that feeds your doorbell transformer off for 30 seconds, then flip it back on. Alternatively, the Ring app has a reboot option: go to Device Health for your doorbell and tap Reboot. The doorbell restarts and reconnects to your network within about a minute.

Improve Your WiFi Connection

This doorbell supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi, which gives you more flexibility than Ring's older models. But live view delays of 5-15 seconds are a known issue when the WiFi signal is weak. Open the Ring app, go to Device Health, and check the RSSI number. Anything above -60 is great, -60 to -70 is okay, and anything worse than -70 is going to cause slow or failed connections. If your RSSI is weak, try moving your router closer or adding a WiFi extender or mesh node near the doorbell.

Reinstall the Ring App

If the app is still acting up after signing out, updating, and checking permissions, a clean install often fixes stubborn problems. On iPhone, long-press the Ring app icon and tap Remove App > Delete App. On Android, long-press and drag to Uninstall. Restart your phone, then download the Ring app fresh from the store and sign in. Your doorbell settings and event history are stored in the cloud on your Ring account, so nothing is lost.

Factory Reset the Doorbell

If nothing else has worked, a full reset is the last resort. Remove the faceplate from your Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro. On the right side of the device you'll see a small setup button. Press and hold it for 20 seconds, then release. The light flashes a few times to confirm the restart. The doorbell returns to factory defaults, and you'll need to set it up again through the Ring app. Resetting wipes your local settings and motion zones but does not delete cloud-stored Ring Protect videos.

Speaking of Ring Protect, keep in mind that video history beyond live view requires a subscription. If you're relying on the free tier and wondering why you can't see recorded events, that's working as designed. And if you notice your Bird-Eye View 3D radar maps showing the wrong path for visitors, a quick recalibration in the device settings usually sorts that out. Pre-Roll captures 4 seconds of video before a motion event, which is handy but won't show up without a Protect plan.
