When your Onn Google TV Stick remote stops responding, you're left with a black screen and no way to control your entertainment. It's a common hiccup with this budget-friendly streamer, but you can almost always get it back on track without much fuss.
I'd start with the simplest fix first. Unplug the power cable from your Onn Google TV Stick itself, not just from the wall outlet. Wait a full 60 seconds before plugging it back in. This quick power cycle resolves a lot of the temporary communication glitches between the stick and its Bluetooth remote.
Replace the Remote Batteries
It sounds obvious, but weak batteries are the number one culprit. Pop open the battery compartment on the back of your remote and swap in a fresh pair of AAA batteries. Make sure they're inserted with the correct polarity, matching the plus and minus symbols inside.
If you're using rechargeable batteries, try a set of brand-new alkalines instead. Sometimes rechargeables don't provide quite enough consistent voltage for the remote's Bluetooth radio.
Re-pair the Remote to the Stick
The Onn remote uses Bluetooth, so if the connection drops, you need to re-pair it. First, make sure your TV is on the correct HDMI input for the stick. Press and hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote simultaneously for about five seconds.
You should see a pairing notification pop up on your TV screen. If that doesn't work, you can also initiate pairing through the stick's settings menu using the Google TV app on your phone as a temporary remote.
Use the Google TV App on Your Phone
This is a great temporary workaround. If you have the Google TV app installed on your Android or iPhone, open it. Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Onn stick.
The app should automatically detect your stick and allow you to select it. You'll get a full virtual remote, complete with a touchpad, directional buttons, and voice search, right on your phone's screen.
Check for Physical Obstructions and Interference
Bluetooth signals can be weakened by physical barriers. If your Onn stick is plugged into a port on the back of your TV, try using the included HDMI extender cable to bring it out into the open. This often improves the remote's signal strength.
Other wireless devices, like cordless phones, microwaves, or even dense metal furniture, can cause interference. Try turning off nearby electronics temporarily to see if your remote starts responding better.
Forget and Re-pair the Remote
If a simple re-pair didn't stick, you can try forcing the stick to forget the remote entirely and start fresh. You'll need to use the Google TV app on your phone to navigate. Go to Settings > Remote & Accessories.
Find your remote in the list and select it, then choose Forget. Once it's removed, put the remote back into pairing mode by holding Back and Home and follow the on-screen prompts to pair it as a new device.
Clear the Cache for the Remote Service
The Onn stick has limited internal storage, and a clogged cache can sometimes cause system services, including the remote connection, to act up. Using the phone app, navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Show system apps.
Scroll to find an app called Remote Control Service or something similar. Select it, then choose Clear cache. This won't delete any personal data, but it can clear out temporary files causing trouble.
Check for a System Update
An outdated software version on the stick itself can lead to remote connectivity bugs. With your phone app, go to Settings > System > About > System update.
Check for any available updates. If one is found, let it download and install. The stick will restart, and it's a good idea to re-pair the remote afterward, as updates can sometimes reset Bluetooth connections.
Inspect the Remote for Physical Damage
Take a close look at the remote. Have the batteries leaked? Is there any visible damage from being dropped? The build quality on these remotes is functional but not premium.
Check the battery contacts inside the compartment for corrosion. If you see any green or white crust, clean it gently with a cotton swab dipped in a little isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely before trying new batteries.
Perform a Factory Reset on the Stick
This is a last resort, as it will erase all your apps, logins, and settings, returning the stick to its original state. You can often initiate this from the phone app under Settings > System > Reset.
If the remote is completely dead and you can't use the app, you can usually perform a physical factory reset by locating the small pinhole button on the side of the Onn stick itself. Use a paperclip to hold this button down for about 10 seconds while the stick is powered on.
