When the volume buttons on your OnePlus Nord 4 stop responding, it can be pretty annoying. You press them to turn down a video or adjust a call, and nothing happens. The good news is, this is often a temporary glitch you can fix yourself without needing a trip to a repair shop.

I'd start with the simplest solutions first, as they often do the trick.

Remove Your Phone Case

Take your Nord 4 out of its case right away. Some cases, especially thicker or ill-fitting ones, can press against the buttons and restrict their movement. With the Nord 4's sleek metal unibody, even a small misalignment can prevent the button from clicking properly.

Test the volume rocker without the case on. If it works, you've found the culprit, and you might need a different case.

Perform a Force Restart

A force restart is the go-to fix for many random software hiccups on Android phones, and it won't delete any of your data. For the OnePlus Nord 4, it's very straightforward.

Just press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds or until you feel the phone vibrate and see the OnePlus logo appear on the screen. This can clear out any temporary software bug that's preventing the system from recognizing your button presses.

Clean Around the Buttons

The Nord 4's metal build is great, but the small gap around the volume rocker can collect pocket lint and dust over time. This is one of the most common reasons buttons get stiff or unresponsive.

You can try blowing gently around the button or using a can of compressed air. For any sticky residue, a cotton swab dipped in a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol can help. Be careful not to get any liquid inside the phone, and let it dry completely before testing the buttons again.

Check Your Sound Settings

It's worth a quick look in your settings to make sure nothing got changed accidentally. Open the Settings app and go to Sound & vibration.

Scroll down and look for the "Physical buttons for media" option. Make sure this is toggled on. If it's off, your volume buttons won't control media playback, which might make them seem broken when you're watching videos or listening to music.

Test the Buttons in Different Apps

Try using the volume rocker in a few different situations. Open the YouTube app and try to adjust the volume, then try it during a phone call, and finally try it from the home screen.

If the buttons work in one app but not another, the problem is likely with that specific app. You can try clearing that app's cache or checking for updates in the Google Play Store.

Update Your Software

Software bugs in OxygenOS can sometimes cause hardware controls to act up. Making sure your Nord 4 is running the latest version of Android and OxygenOS is an important step.

Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the top banner to check for updates. If an update is available, connect to Wi-Fi and install it. A software update has fixed button responsiveness issues for many users.

Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps you've downloaded. This helps you figure out if a recently installed app is causing a conflict with your volume buttons.

To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK".

Once in Safe Mode (you'll see "Safe mode" in the bottom corner), test your volume buttons. If they work perfectly, a third-party app is the problem. You'll need to restart your phone to exit Safe Mode and then uninstall apps one by one to find the offender.

Try the On-Screen Volume Slider

While you're working on the physical button, remember you can always adjust volume from the screen. Just press the volume up or down button once, and a larger volume panel will appear on the side of the display.

You can drag this slider up or down with your finger. You can also tap the settings icon (it looks like three dots) on this panel to quickly access your ringtone, media, and alarm volume settings separately.

Consider a Factory Reset

If none of the above steps have worked, a deeper software issue might be at play. A factory reset will wipe your phone back to its original out-of-the-box state, so this is a last resort.

Crucially, you must back up all your important data first. Photos, messages, and app data can be backed up to your Google account or locally. Once backed up, you can initiate the reset by going to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Erase all data (factory reset).

Follow the on-screen instructions. After the reset is complete, set up your phone as new and test the volume buttons immediately before restoring your data, to see if the issue is resolved.
