If your OnePlus Nord 4's fingerprint scanner isn't responding or is slow to unlock, it can lock you out of your own phone. The good news is this is usually a software hiccup or a simple setup issue that you can fix yourself. Let's get it working again.

Clean the Display and Your Finger

The Nord 4 uses an optical in-display fingerprint sensor, which means it reads your print through the screen. Any smudges, grease, or moisture on the display can block the sensor's view. Give your screen a good wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.

Make sure your finger is clean and dry, too. Sweat, lotion, or even a small cut can throw off the recognition. I'd start with this simple clean before trying anything more involved, as it fixes the issue more often than you'd think.

Restart Your Phone

A quick restart clears out temporary software glitches that can confuse the sensor. Just press and hold the power button for a few seconds, then tap 'Restart' on the screen.

If the touchscreen is unresponsive, you can force a restart by holding the power button down for about 10 seconds until you feel it vibrate and the OnePlus logo appears. This takes about 30 seconds total and is a great first troubleshooting step.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

Sometimes the stored fingerprint data gets corrupted. Removing the old print and adding it again is often the most effective fix. Go to Settings > Password & security > Fingerprint and enter your PIN or password.

Tap on the fingerprint you're having trouble with and select 'Delete'. Now, tap 'Add fingerprint' and follow the prompts. Press firmly and roll your finger slightly to capture the edges, just like the animation shows. Register the same finger twice for better accuracy.

Check for a Screen Protector

Not all screen protectors play nice with in-display sensors. If you recently applied a new protector, especially a thick tempered glass one, it might be the culprit.

Try removing it temporarily to see if the fingerprint reader improves. If it does, look for a screen protector marketed as compatible with in-display fingerprint sensors. The official one from OnePlus is always a safe bet for the Nord 4.

Update Your Software

Outdated software can have bugs that affect the fingerprint sensor. OnePlus regularly releases updates with performance improvements and fixes. Open Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the top banner to check for updates.

If an update is available, download and install it. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least a 50% charge, or better yet, plug in the included 100W SuperVOOC charger. After the update completes, test your fingerprint again.

Increase Touch Sensitivity

OxygenOS has a setting specifically to improve touch response when using a screen protector. Turning this on can help the fingerprint sensor read your print more easily. Navigate to Settings > Additional settings > Screen protector mode and toggle it on.

This setting increases the touch sensitivity across the entire display, which can make a noticeable difference for fingerprint recognition if you're using any kind of protector.

Clear the System Cache

Corrupted cache files can cause all sorts of strange behavior, including a finicky fingerprint sensor. Clearing the system cache is safe and won't delete your personal data. First, power off your Nord 4 completely.

Now, press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons together. Release them when you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo. You'll be in Recovery Mode. Use the volume buttons to highlight 'Wipe data and cache' and press the power button to select it.

Then, choose 'Wipe cache' and confirm. Once it's done, select 'Reboot'. This process takes about a minute and can resolve underlying software conflicts.

Check Your Fingerprint Unlock Settings

There are a couple of settings that might be affecting how the sensor behaves. Go back to Settings > Password & security > Fingerprint. Look for 'Unlock with fingerprint' and make sure it's toggled on.

Also, check the 'Fingerprint animation' setting. Some users have reported that switching this animation off or changing its style can slightly improve the recognition speed. It's worth a quick toggle to test.

Register Your Fingerprint in Different Conditions

If your finger is often slightly damp or dry when you try to unlock, the sensor might not recognize it. Try re-adding your fingerprint under the conditions you most commonly use your phone.

For example, if your hands are often dry, register the print then. You can also register the same finger a second time under different conditions to give the phone a broader sample to work with, which improves consistency.

Test in Safe Mode

A third-party app you installed could be interfering with the biometric security system. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps. Press and hold the power button until the power menu appears.

Then, tap and hold the 'Power off' option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap 'OK'. Once in Safe Mode (you'll see 'Safe Mode' in the bottom corner), test the fingerprint sensor.

If it works perfectly in Safe Mode, a recently installed app is likely the cause. Restart your phone normally to exit Safe Mode, and try uninstalling apps one by one to find the offender.
