If your OnePlus 12's fingerprint scanner suddenly stops recognizing you, it can lock you out of your own phone. This is a common hiccup with in-display sensors, but it's usually something you can fix yourself in a few minutes. Let's get it working again.
Clean Your Screen and Finger
This is the most common fix, and I'd start here. The optical sensor under your screen needs a clear view of your fingerprint. Any smudges, grease, or moisture on the screen can completely block it.
Grab a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe the entire screen down, paying extra attention to the lower area where you place your thumb. Make sure your own finger is clean and dry, too. Hand lotion, sweat, or even a tiny bit of dirt can be enough to cause a misread.
Restart Your OnePlus 12
A quick reboot clears out temporary software glitches that can confuse the sensor. Just press and hold the power button for a few seconds and tap restart.
If the phone is completely unresponsive, you can force a restart. Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until you feel it vibrate and see the OnePlus logo appear. This is different from a normal restart and can solve deeper freezes.
Re-register Your Fingerprint
Sometimes the stored fingerprint data gets corrupted. Deleting and re-adding your print often solves the problem for good. Head to Settings > Password & security > Fingerprint.
Enter your PIN or password, tap the fingerprint you're having trouble with, and select delete. Now, add it again. When you do, make sure to roll your finger around to capture the edges, just like the animation shows. A more complete scan makes it more reliable.
Check for a Software Update
OnePlus frequently releases updates that fix bugs, including ones related to biometric sensors. An outdated system could be the culprit. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the icon at the top right to check for updates.
If an update is available, install it. It's a good idea to plug your phone into the included 100W SUPERVOOC charger while updating, as the process can use a fair bit of battery.
Test Without a Screen Protector
This is a big one for in-display sensors. Not all screen protectors are created equal, especially with optical fingerprint readers. Thick glass protectors or ones with certain coatings can scatter the light and prevent a good scan.
Try carefully removing your screen protector temporarily and see if the fingerprint reader starts working. If it does, you'll need to look for a protector marketed specifically as compatible with in-display fingerprint sensors. Some brands even have "fingerprint-friendly" versions.
Increase Touch Sensitivity
OxygenOS has a setting that boosts screen sensitivity, which can help the fingerprint sensor work better with screen protectors. It's worth turning this on even if you don't use a protector, as it can improve reliability.
Go to Settings > Additional settings > Screen & display. Look for an option called "Increase touch sensitivity" or "High touch sensitivity" and toggle it on. Give the fingerprint reader a test after enabling it.
Clear the System Cache
If you're still having issues, clearing the system cache can resolve deeper software conflicts without touching your personal data. First, power your OnePlus 12 off completely.
Now, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together. When the OnePlus logo appears, let go of the power button but keep holding volume down until you enter Recovery Mode. Use the volume keys to highlight "Wipe data and cache" and press the power button to select it.
Then, choose "Wipe cache" and confirm. Once it's done, select "Reboot" to restart your phone normally. This process can take a minute or two.
Check for App Interference
In rare cases, a recently installed app with overlay permissions could interfere with the secure fingerprint process. Think about any new apps you've added around the time the problem started.
You can try booting into Safe Mode to test. Hold the power button until the power menu appears, then press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. Tap "OK" when prompted to reboot to Safe Mode. If the fingerprint works fine here, a third-party app is likely the cause. You'll need to uninstall apps one by one to find the offender.
Ensure Your Finger is Positioned Correctly
The sensor area is smaller than you might think. When you place your finger, try to cover the entire icon that lights up. Don't just tap with the very tip of your finger.
Apply a firm, steady press and hold it for a full second until the unlock animation completes. Lifting your finger too quickly is a common reason for failed reads. If your thumb is consistently failing, try registering a different finger, like your index finger, as a backup.
Review Your Security Settings
Go back to Settings > Password & security > Fingerprint and look at the options there. Make sure "Fingerprint unlock" is toggled on. You can also check if "Show fingerprint icon" is enabled, which gives you a visual target on the always-on display.
It's also smart to have a strong backup method set up. Ensure your PIN, password, or pattern is something you remember easily, so you're never completely locked out if the sensor has an off day.
