A black screen on your Nothing Phone 2a can be a real scare, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might be on but the display is frozen, or a software hiccup has caused everything to lock up. Let's walk through the steps to get your screen glowing again.
Force Restart Your Phone 2a
This is almost always the first and best step. Simply press and hold the Power button for 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays dark. You should feel a vibration and then see the Nothing logo appear as the phone reboots. This process works even when the touchscreen is completely unresponsive.
Check Your Charging Setup
A fully drained battery will show nothing on the screen. Grab your USB-C cable and plug it into a working wall adapter. Here's a key tip for the Phone 2a: look at the back. The Glyph Interface LEDs should pulse with a white light to indicate active charging. If they don't light up at all, the phone isn't receiving power.
Try a different cable and a different power adapter. For the fastest charging, you need a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 charger rated at 45W or higher. Leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again, as a completely dead battery needs time to build up a minimal charge.
Inspect for Physical Damage
Take a close look at the screen under good light. Check for any cracks, deep scratches, or unusual dark spots. Listen and feel for signs of life: does the phone vibrate for notifications? Can you hear it ring if someone calls?
If the phone seems to be functioning (you hear sounds, the Glyph lights might activate for notifications) but the screen stays black, the display hardware itself is likely damaged. This would require a professional screen replacement.
Adjust the Screen Brightness
It's possible, though less common, for the screen to appear completely black because the brightness has been accidentally turned all the way down. Since you can't see the screen, try using Google Assistant. Say "Hey Google, set brightness to maximum." If the phone is on and listening, this should work.
Check for Software Updates via Recovery
If a force restart didn't help, you can try to refresh the software. You'll need a computer with a USB port. Connect your Phone 2a to the computer using your USB-C cable. Then, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button together for a few seconds until you see a special menu.
Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Recovery mode" and press the power button to select it. You'll see an Android robot with an exclamation mark. From here, you can select "Apply update from ADB" if you're technically inclined, or use the option to wipe the cache partition, which can resolve software conflicts without deleting your data.
Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
Warning: This will erase all data from your phone. Only proceed if you have a backup. If you're stuck in the Recovery Mode menu mentioned above, you can select "Wipe data/factory reset." This will completely restore the phone to its original software state.
If you can't get into recovery mode, you might need to use the Android Flash Tool on a computer, which is a more involved process. This is a deep restore option when the phone is completely unresponsive to normal button presses.
Look for Signs of Liquid Exposure
If your Phone 2a has been near water or spilled liquid, moisture could interfere with the display connectors. Power the phone off if you can. Then, leave it in a dry, warm place with good airflow for at least 48 hours. I'd avoid using rice, as the dust can get into the ports.
The Glyph lights on the back have small openings, so be extra patient with drying. If the screen doesn't return after it's thoroughly dry, internal corrosion from liquid damage is a likely cause.
