Sony is raising PlayStation Plus prices for new subscribers starting May 20, pushing the Essential tier's monthly cost from $10 to $11 for the first time in years. The three-month subscription jumps from $25 to $28.
Sony blamed "ongoing market conditions" in an announcement on X that drew immediate backlash from players. The price hike applies to select regions including the US, UK, and Europe, though Sony did not specify the full list.
Current subscribers are exempt unless their subscription lapses, changes tiers, or gets canceled. The new pricing lands at $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, or £7.99 GBP for one month of Essential, and $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR, or £21.99 GBP for three months. The annual $80 plan appears unchanged for now.
This is Sony's second price increase on PlayStation services in as many months. The company raised PS5 console prices in March, also citing global economic pressures. A standard PS5 with a disc drive now costs $650. The "market conditions" explanation feels thin for a digital subscription. Unlike hardware, PS Plus isn't directly affected by tariffs, oil prices, or AI-driven memory shortages that have driven up console and component costs. The service costs Sony mostly server maintenance and licensing fees for monthly games. Kotaku's Ethan Gach suggested the hike is more likely aimed at subsidizing ballooning first-party game budgets than covering external market pressures. The timing also raises questions. With GTA 6 expected later this year, a flood of new players will need PlayStation Plus to play GTA Online.
Sony may be locking in higher rates before that subscriber wave hits.
Sony's gaming business is in a mixed position. The company forecast annual sales down 6% to 4.42 trillion yen (roughly $28 billion) due to lower hardware sales. But gaming profit is expected to rise 30%, driven by first-party software and the absence of the Bungie impairment loss that dragged down previous results.
Turkey and India are the exceptions. Users in those regions will see prices rise on existing active subscriptions as well, unlike other markets where only new customers pay more. The Extra and Premium tiers, at $15 and $18 per month respectively, remain unchanged for now. Sony previously jacked up annual PS Plus plans by as much as $40 in 2023.
