An R-rated animated adaptation of FromSoftware's gothic horror game Bloodborne is in development at Sony Pictures, with studio leadership promising to preserve the brutal violence that defined the 2015 PlayStation exclusive.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch confirmed the project during the studio's CinemaCon presentation earlier this week.
"The film would be very true to the gory spirit of Bloodborne."
The announcement marks a departure from typical video game adaptations that often tone down mature content for broader audiences. The production brings together PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and gaming YouTuber Sean McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye, who will serve as co-producer. McLoughlin has built a following of more than 48 million online fans through his extensive playthroughs of Bloodborne, bringing firsthand understanding of what makes the game compelling to fans.
Bloodborne follows a hunter dealing with a Victorian-era city infected with a bloodborne disease that transforms residents into nightmarish creatures. Developed by Japanese studio FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2015, the game earned critical acclaim for its challenging combat system and cosmic horror themes inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's works.
Sony's commitment to an R-rating suggests confidence in recent successes with faithful video game adaptations. The studio found massive viewership with HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us and has previously announced plans for a Helldivers film directed by Justin Lin starring Jason Momoa. A live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation with Nintendo is scheduled for release in 2027.
No director, cast members, or release date have been confirmed for the Bloodborne film. The project remains in early development stages following its CinemaCon reveal.
