After seven generations of foldables, Samsung is finally fixing the crease by rebuilding the display support structure with titanium, announcing Flex Titanium technology one week before Galaxy Unpacked. The new system replaces the polymer film that has sat beneath foldable OLED panels since the original Galaxy Fold with two titanium-based components working in tandem. A titanium-alloy film positioned directly below the OLED panel delivers 20 times greater mechanical stiffness than the plastic it replaces, while a titanium plate underneath supports the display module through advanced hole processing that eliminates air gaps between components.
The titanium-alloy film measures less than 30% the thickness of a human hair, achieved through precision rolling. That thinness lets Samsung slim down the overall display panel while making it dramatically harder to dent or deform. The titanium plate below uses sophisticated micro-patterned holes in its folding section, solving the engineering challenge of making a famously rigid metal bend reliably thousands of times.
Samsung did not specify which devices get the upgrade, but the technology is widely expected to appear on both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, with some reports suggesting a wider Fold model could join the lineup. The crease reduction is the headline feature, but Samsung also claims improvements to display quality. The company said the new display integrates a high-resolution architecture with next-generation organic materials that deliver ultra-vivid resolution while reducing power consumption.
"Samsung's strength in the foldable category comes from connecting user needs with technologies that deliver tangible benefits in everyday life," said Sunghoon Moon, EVP and Senior Executive of the Mobile R&D Office at Samsung Electronics.
Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Team at Samsung Display, described the engineering approach behind the titanium plate. "By introducing sophisticated micro-patterned holes to the folding section of the titanium plate. We have successfully secured flexibility with strong durability," Yoo said.
Flex Titanium debuts on Samsung's next-generation foldables at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 in London, where full device details, pricing, and availability are expected. The timing puts Samsung's most meaningful foldable hardware revision on the market just as Apple prepares its first foldable iPhone.
