Samsung's $2,899 Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone will disappear from store shelves just three months after launch, confirming what many suspected about the triple-folding device's limited lifespan. The Korean electronics giant confirmed to Bloomberg it will wind down sales of the experimental foldable, starting with its home market of South Korea today before clearing remaining inventory in the United States.

The move suggests the device was always intended as more of a technological showcase than a cornerstone of Samsung's mobile lineup.

Launched in South Korea last December and arriving stateside in January, the Galaxy Z TriFold represented Samsung's most ambitious folding phone yet. With two hinges instead of one, it could expand from a 6.5-inch phone into a 10-inch tablet, featuring what Samsung called "minimized creasing" and containing a 5,600 mAh three-cell battery system, the largest ever used in one of its smartphones.

Despite its $2,899 price tag, each limited production run reportedly sold out within minutes, with some second-hand sellers asking several times retail price during peak demand periods. The device appeared briefly back in stock weeks after launch but has since shown as "sold out" on Samsung's US website without any indication of future restocks.

Industry sources quoted by Korean publication Donga described the TriFold as a "symbolic product" meant to showcase Samsung's foldable technology rather than generate major revenue. The company has yet to decide whether to develop a successor model.

Samsung Experience Stores in Texas and New York reportedly still had units available earlier this month, though availability has become increasingly scarce as word spread about the impending discontinuation. Customers hoping to purchase one may need to visit physical locations rather than relying on online channels.

The timing coincides with strong sales for Samsung's more conventional Galaxy S26 Ultra, which retails for less than half the TriFold's price at $1,300 while offering mainstream appeal rather than experimental form factors.

Samsung plans to focus its foldable efforts on upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 models expected later this year.
