Ocarina of Time is getting a full ground-up remake for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo confirmed during its June 9 Direct. The 1998 classic arrives later this year, timed to the Zelda franchise's 40th anniversary. The teaser trailer revealed almost nothing.
A voiceover from the Great Deku Tree narrates the story of the Kokiri, the forest children who each have a fairy companion except one, Link. The camera lingers on a sleeping Young Link as the Triforce glows on his hand. A modern Ocarina of Time logo fades in.
No gameplay, no release month, no developer credit.
"The Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2," Nintendo said in a statement.
What little the trailer shows suggests a visual direction that breaks from the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom style. The remake appears to aim for a more realistic look, closer to character designs seen in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate than the watercolor Hyrule of Nintendo's recent Zelda output.
Nintendo has not said which studio is building the remake. The 3DS version from 2011 was handled by Grezzo, which rebuilt Ocarina of Time with stereoscopic 3D and quality-of-life improvements. The mainline Zelda studio Monolith Soft last shipped Tears of the Kingdom in 2023, and VGC reports it could be involved in the project.
The announcement validates a report from March that VGC's sources said was pointing to both a new Star Fox game and an Ocarina of Time remake arriving this year. Star Fox was confirmed last month.
This marks the second time Ocarina of Time has been fully remade. The 2011 3DS version updated graphics and added motion controls. The original has been ported to nearly every Nintendo platform since its 1998 debut, including the GameCube (bundled with Master Quest), Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles, and Nintendo Switch Online.
The Zelda series turned 40 earlier this year. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa declined to comment on anniversary plans when asked. A live-action Zelda film from director Wes Ball arrives in theaters April 30, 2027, with Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Nintendo has not set a specific release date for the Ocarina of Time remake beyond 2026. More details are promised for the future.
