Google's Gemini AI now synthesizes information across Workspace apps without explicit user direction, marking a shift from simple assistance to autonomous knowledge processing. The March 2026 update transforms Gemini into what Google calls "a knowledge-aware system" that examines and assimilates relevant data from Drive, Gmail, and other Workspace files.
Instead of requiring users to manually input information they want included in documents, the AI can now autonomously generate content by analyzing existing data sources.
Gemini achieves a 70.48% success rate on complex spreadsheet tasks according to Google's performance metrics, approaching human expert levels for data management. Users can instruct the system with natural language commands like "organize my upcoming move," prompting it to scan Gmail for utility contact information and extract moving quotes directly from email inboxes to populate spreadsheet cells automatically.
A new "Fill with Gemini" tool predicts and completes data by examining existing cells or pulling live information from Google Search results. This extends beyond basic template generation to active data synthesis across multiple sources within a user's Google account ecosystem.
In Google Docs, the enhanced "Help me create" feature synthesizes information from an entire Drive collection when drafting documents like marketing plans or campaign reports. The system locates relevant files, structures new documents appropriately, and maintains brand-specific tone consistency based on previous successful campaigns stored in Drive archives.
Slides functionality has expanded beyond image generation to include actual slide content creation with layouts matching company branding guidelines. While full presentation generation from single prompts remains under development according to Google's roadmap, individual slide construction already incorporates context from emails and files within Workspace environments.
Drive transforms from passive storage into an active knowledge base through the "Ask Gemini in Drive" feature that processes queries across multiple selected documents simultaneously. Users can request summaries of tax obligations based on receipts and emails stored throughout their accounts, receiving cited answers directly within search results rather than document lists requiring manual review.
These capabilities require Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) or Ultra ($124.99/month) subscriptions according to pricing details, with business customers having additional access through optional Gemini Alpha features within Workspace environments.
Most Docs and Sheets updates are available globally in English currently, while advanced Drive search functionality begins with US-only deployment according to regional rollout plans.
"The system represents incremental improvements more than revolutionary features that address specific workflow gaps by embedding AI assistance directly within daily productivity tools."
