Google has expanded its free streaming service with a major catalog upgrade, bringing video-on-demand to Google TV Freeplay alongside its existing live channel lineup. Viewers can now watch more than 10,000 free movies and shows whenever they want, with no subscription required.
The service is available on Google TV devices in the U.S. only, and all Freeplay content, both live channels and on-demand, is ad-supported.
To start watching, users open the Freeplay app from their Home screen and jump right in. Access requires a Google Account and high-speed internet.
Google is also expanding the live side of Freeplay, growing the lineup to more than 300 free channels across news, sports, reality TV, true crime, and other categories. Recent channel additions include World of Love Island, Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo! Sports Network, and The Martha Stewart Channel.
The on-demand library draws from top studios like A24 and Lionsgate, with titles ranging from Oscar winners such as "Lady Bird" to crowd favorites like "Seventeen Again" and "Hell's Kitchen." Google says it will be refreshing the library all year long, though the company hasn't specified how the collection will change over time.
How-To Geek notes that Google's on-demand library remains smaller than some rivals, with Tubi carrying over 40,000 TV shows and The Roku Channel offering more than 80,000 movies and TV episodes.
Freeplay's live channel count does exceed Tubi's roughly 260 channels, though Google hasn't produced its own original content the way Roku and Tubi have. Content availability is subject to change, and Google's catalog rotation strategy remains unclear compared to competitors that regularly swap their selections.
