Google dropped Wear OS 7 as a surprise addition to its I/O 2026 lineup, and the update targets the three complaints that have driven users away from smartwatches: battery anxiety, constant phone-checking, and stale customization.

Built on Android 17, Wear OS 7 is projected to deliver up to a 10% improvement in battery life over Wear OS 6 thanks to power optimizations baked into the new platform. That alone addresses the single biggest reason users abandon smartwatches mid-day.

Live Updates are making the jump from Android 16 phones directly to the watch face, replacing the older Ongoing Activities API. Food delivery status, ride-sharing progress, and live sports scores appear without opening an app. The feature will also mirror phone notifications, so users see Live Updates from apps they don't even have installed on the watch.

Wear OS 7 introduces dynamic Wear Widgets, an evolution of the existing tiles system that now supports 2x1 and 2x2 layouts. The widgets matches Android's mobile widget design, creating visual consistency across devices.

Gemini Intelligence arrives on select smartwatches through new AppFunctions APIs that let developers connect their apps to Google's assistant for direct task automation from the wrist. Users can place food orders or start fitness tracking without pulling out their phone. The caveat: Gemini Intelligence has steep system requirements on phones (12GB RAM, Gemini Nano v3), so watch-side AI will likely rely on a tethered connection rather than on-device processing. A standardized Workout Tracker experience is built directly into the OS, offering heart rate monitoring, workout progress, and integrated media controls across fitness apps. Google is collaborating with ASICS Runkeeper to debut the feature.

Enhanced media controls include a Remote Output Switcher for smooth audio device switching and per-app auto-launch settings.

Developers can start testing now through the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator. The consumer rollout is expected later in 2026, with Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch ranges confirmed to receive the update.

Google has not yet published a full compatibility list for older Wear OS 6 watches.
