Apple is accelerating its smartphone camera ambitions with a 200-megapixel telephoto sensor under active testing, potentially arriving in iPhones as soon as next year rather than waiting until 2028.
The company is evaluating a 200MP 1/1.12-inch configuration identical to Oppo's upcoming Find X9 Ultra flagship, according to leaker Digital Chat Station on Chinese social platform Weibo. This is a dramatic four-fold increase over the current 48MP sensors in iPhone 17 Pro models and marks Apple's most aggressive megapixel leap since abandoning its long-held 12MP standard.
Sensor size matters more than pixel count for image quality, particularly in low-light conditions where smaller pixels introduce noise. The rumored 1/1.12-inch format addresses this by providing approximately 93 square millimeters of surface area, compared to 71.5 square millimeters in current iPhone Pro main cameras and just 48 square millimeters in standard models.
Digital Chat Station first suggested Apple was working on a 200MP camera last May, with investment bank Morgan Stanley backing the claim earlier this year while projecting a more conservative 2028 launch timeline. The latest report indicates development has progressed beyond supply chain discussions into active testing phases.
If implemented as described, the high-resolution sensor would likely be reserved for telephoto lenses rather than main cameras, following Oppo's approach with its Find X9 Pro that debuted a similar periscopic zoom system earlier this year. Telephoto applications reduce low-light performance concerns while enabling detailed cropping and large-format printing capabilities.
Apple historically resisted megapixel escalation while competitors like Samsung introduced 200MP cameras on Galaxy S23 Ultra models back in 2023. The company prioritized computational photography and larger individual pixels over raw resolution counts, maintaining leadership in challenging lighting conditions where many personal photos are captured.
